  Lowe was High Constable of Cook Co., Ill., in 1839, for three years; first asst. eng.&lt;br /&gt;
of the Chicago Fire Department. In 1840 he was captain of the local military com-&lt;br /&gt;
pany. In 1842, as sheriff, he sold the first and, I think, only black man, Edwin&lt;br /&gt;
HEATHCOCK, at public sale for the munificent sum of 25 cents to M. D. OGDEN. (Source: &lt;br /&gt;

  Whitney was a well known resident at Dansville, N.Y., and has followed agricultural&lt;br /&gt;
pursuits all his life. He was one of the founders of the town of Fairbanks, Florida,&lt;br /&gt;
where at one time he owned and extensive orange grove; res. Dansville, N.Y.&lt;br /&gt;

                  was brought up in Rochester, N.Y., where he attended the&lt;br /&gt;
                  public schools, and graduated at Wilson's private school. In&lt;br /&gt;
                  1871 he went to Columbus, where he remained until 1883, when&lt;br /&gt;
                  he went to Chicago. He studied law at the Union College of&lt;br /&gt;
                  Law, and was graduated with honors in June, 1876, and was at&lt;br /&gt;
                  once admitted to the bar and began practice. He is an able&lt;br /&gt;
                  and successful advocate and counselor.&lt;br /&gt;

  He was the eldest son of Dr. Jonathan WHITNEY, of Cayuga. Possessed of a&lt;br /&gt;
most genial temperament, which attached to him all who were brought within his&lt;br /&gt;
influence, active in business, and with a capacity to take a prominent place in any of&lt;br /&gt;
the growing cities of New York, he was nevertheless content to pass a long life of&lt;br /&gt;
humble usefulness in the village of his birth, enjoying the independence of such posi-&lt;br /&gt;
tion and happy in the opportunities which it afforded. Through most of his mature&lt;br /&gt;
life he was a justice of the peace of his town, the counselor and advisor of the com-&lt;br /&gt;
munity in matter of business, and the kind friend to whom all looked for sympathy&lt;br /&gt;
and assistance in time of affliction or pecuniary disaster. In his temperance, cheer-&lt;br /&gt;
fulness, industry and benevolence he blessed his own life and the lives of all about&lt;br /&gt;
him. Few men in Cayuga Co. were so well known as he. A Rochester paper in a&lt;br /&gt;
lengthy obituary says: &amp;quot;It is doubtful if there survives him any one born within the&lt;br /&gt;
country who has attained a more advanced age and certainly no one more respected&lt;br /&gt;

My interest is by genealogy and by marriage, twice. Charles Henry Whitney (born NY 1824, #2348 in Frederick Clifton Pierce's 1895 book) married Elizabeth Lowe, whose sister Roxana is the mother of my step-grandmother Evalyn Warner Henderson.&lt;br /&gt;
