I have seen similar problems when reading through old handwritten documents where a cursive L and S look very similar as do a cursive L and T. Someone then misinterprets the handwriting and puts in a plain text document the misspelling and it continues on until someone looks at the original again and notices the transcription error. It could be a simple as this.

Kneeland, born 27 Jun 1814; died at Topeka, Kansas, 15 Oct 1887.

He was born on a farm in Waterbury and resided with his parents, while his only brother left his home to seek his fortunes in the west. Soon after his marriage, in 1838, he left on a visit to his brother in the west, going via the Erie canal. He was absent eight months. In 1859 he went west to the extreme border of civilization at that time, twenty miles beyond Manhattan, Kansas, much nearer the Indians than was comfortable. In 1877 he moved to Topeka and died there. He died 17 Apr 1889; resided Waterbury, Vermont, and Topeka, Kansas.
'''Additional information:'''

- Baxter's middle name was likely William as he is recorded in the 1850 census as Baxter Willy Whitney. Baxter and wife Mary; their son Arthur and his first wife Emma are buried together in the Milford (Kansas) cemetery.

- William Wallace Whitney died as a sergeant in the 1st Vermont Cavalry on December 29th, 1864. His headstone can be seen under Cemeteries (Old Waterbury Centre Cemetery).

- Katherine Amelia's baby boy, who died at 12 days of age, was named William Wallace Whiting, presumably named after Katherine's brother who at that time was serving in the Civil War. Both William Wallace's died within two months of each other.
Until he was twenty years of age he lived with his parents on a farm in the state of Vermont. In 1866 his parents moved to Milford, Kansas, where he learned the miller's trade. In 1881 he moved with his family to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and spent the succeeding four years there and in that vicinity. He then returned to Kansas and the miller's occupation.
First, welcome to the WRG website! I saw your message to Robert Ward and thought I'd send you a reply. We would '''LOVE''' to test a direct descendant of the Whitneys of Whitney-on-Wye, but we have not been able to locate any to be tested. As far as we know, the direct line died out back in 1670 when the manor was inherited by daughters. There must be other male-line descendants of other brothers from earlier generations, but as yet we have not made contact with them.
You indicated that you are related to a line of Baxter Whitney. Do you know anymore about this? Baxter Whitney was born in Waterbury Vermont in 1812, he left Vermont for Kansas in 1866. He had a brother Solon and 5 children, Arthur Barton Whitney, Katherine Amelia Whitney (married AB Whiting), George Baxter Whitney (died at age 15 in 1851), William Wallace Whitney (died at age 24 in the Civil War) and Emeline B. Whitney (born 1844).

I have never heard him referred to as famous nor linked to Maine so your Baxter may a different one.

Hello, my name is Hugh Whitney and I'm interested in finding out more about the descendants of Baxter Whitney (1812-1887) and his wife Mary Anne Kneeland (1814-1887). They lived in Waterbury, Vermont until 1866 when they moved west to Milford Kansas. Baxter was a flour miller by trade. Baxter and Mary Anne had 5 children; George Baxter Whitney (1837-1851), Arthur Barton Whitney (1846-1917), Katherine Amelia Whitney (1837/38-1907), Emeline B. Whitney (1844-?) and William Wallace Whitney (1840-1864). The 1860 US census identifies an Otis Whitney in this household, with the same age as Arthur Barton. Due to the premature death of Baxter's brother Solon Whitney, Solon's son Otis lived with his Uncle Baxter.

Baxter's parents were Deacon Chester Whitney (1783-1850) and Polly Waite Green (1784-1854).

George Baxter died young for reasons I am unaware of.

Katherine married Albe Burge Whiting in 1858, who was a successful businessman. They moved to Kansas as well. A lot is known about AB Whiting as he eventually moved to Topeka Kansas and supported the growing university there (Washburn College which became Washburn University). There is a Whiting Field House on the campus and a memorial gate for AB and Kate at a local cemetery as they supported its establishment. They had six children of which 4 survived to adulthood.

Emeline B. I know nothing about.

William Wallace enlisted in company D of the 1st Vermont Cavalry on August 18, 1862 during the US Civil War. He achieved the rank of sargeant and died in the army on December 29th, 1864. He was buried on January 1st, 1865 in the same cemetery as his brother George.

Arthur Barton married Emma Julia Patch of Vermont, and moved to Kansas with his father in 1866. Arthur worked mostly as a flour miller in Milford. Emma and Arthur had one child, Frank Arthur Whitney, born October 18, 1869. Emma died in 1879 after an extended illness, it was assumed to have been TB. Frank Arthur is my grandfather.

I am interested in further details on all of these people.

Photos of the headstones of Chester, Polly, William Wallace and George Baxter Whitney can be seen on the Vermont cemeteries page (Old Waterbury Center Cemetery).
Thank you.

Baxter's parents were Chester Whitney (1783-1850) and Polly Waite Green (1784-1854). I have a photo of their headstone in a Vermont cemetery (between Stowe and Waterbury).

George Baxter died young for reasons I am unaware of. I have a photo of his headstone in the same cemetery.

I have a photo of the headstone.

Whitney (1844-?) and William Wallace Whitney (1840-1864). The 1860 US census identifies an Otis Whitney in this household, with the same age as Arthur Barton, possibly a twin brother. He does not appear in either the 1850 or 1870 census or in subsequent accounts. I can understand his absence in the 1850 census as data is often missing if someone was not in the household at the time but subsequent absences suggest he may have died young.
{{ForumNewPost|UserID=Hugh Whitney|Date=30 December 2006|Text=I am interested in finding more information about Arthur Barton Whitney (son of Baxter Whitney) who emigrated to Milford, Kansas from Vermont about 1866 with his wife Emma Julia Patch and his father (Baxter). Presumably the mother was also present (Mary Anne Kneeland) as she died in 1887. He was probably accompanied by at least his sister Katherine Amelia Whitney and possibly her husband Albe Burge Whiting, though I believe Albe might have gone out earlier (about 1856). Emma died in 1879 of TB.

In addition I have some photos of Whitney headstones from a cemetery between Stowe and Waterbury VT. I don't know the name of the cemetery. They are for William Wallace Whitney (1840-1864), his brother George Baxter Whitney (1837-1851); and their grandparents Chester Whitney (1783-1850) and Polly Waite Green (1784-1854). I can submit to this website if there is interest.
