The Steam Man
</td>
<td valign="top">George Eli Whitney, an early pioneer in automotive history, "was tinkering with steam cars before the turn of the 20th century. While others turned their attention to the new-fangled gasoline engine, he stayed with steam, founding the Whitney Motor Wagon Company. He designed and built a succession of steam-driven carriages, starting with, he believed, the first steam-driven car ever built. Many of the ideas that found their way into the steam automobile are attributable to him. The Stanley Brothers, famous founders of the Stanley Steamer, sought advice from him and used some of his ideas in their first cars."1

He was born on June 10, 1862 [1868 per Pierce6].

"His father, John Webster Parkins Whitney, was a highly skilled engraver who made gold and silver dies for the Philadelphia Mint. Uncle Amos Whitney founded Pratt &amp; Whitney Company, which manufactures over 1/3 of the world's jet engines for the military and the airlines. His uncle Clarence Whitney founded the Whitney Chain Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and his great grandfather's brother was the famous inventor of the cotton gin, Eli Whitney.";2

"Born in 1862, Whitney was raised in Boston where he displayed his mechanical ability at a very young age. At 12, his favorite playground was the yard of the Boston and Albany Railroad where he spent many hours watching the "iron horses" roll by. Franklin D. Child, superintendent of the Hinkley Locomotive Works, took an interest in the young lad with a passion for steam engines and he gave the boy a set of blueprints for a Hinkley locomotive saying, "Here you go lad, take these home and study them." Study them he did and, incredibly, he spent the next 8 years building a small working model from the blueprints. The achievement is tempered only slightly by the fact that he was able to make many of the parts at the Pratt &amp; Whitney plant on weekends and holidays under the critical eye of his uncle Amos Whitney. Of course, without the use of the casting and machining equipment at his uncle's plant, his project would have been impossible, nevertheless, he made every single part himself."2

"Whitney got his early education at the local Boston public schools and later attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he completed the 2-year course offered by the School of Mechanical Engineering. After finishing his education at M.I.T., he spent a few years working part time for S. H. Roper where he performed various tasks of steam fitting and boiler making. After his wife, Ida, died in 1888 [1890 per Pierce6] he formed a partnership with a man named Joseph Crowther and they started a machine shop in Boston near Haymarket Square. Whitney operated the business as a sole proprietorship after his partner left and he was soon building steam launches and yachts. He contracted the hulls to local boat builders, but the overall designs were his own and he equipped them with Whitney designed engines. His reputation grew rapidly and soon he was receiving orders from Maine to Florida."2

"In 1888 he hired an apprentice named Nathanial Coolidge who eventually became his assistant, confidante and lifelong friend. By 1890 Whitney and Coolidge had built or fitted engines to 96 steamboats along the Eastern Seaboard. In 1890 they moved their shop to a permanent location at Mayo's Wharf in East Boston. The steam carriage bug bit Whitney when Sylvester Roper took him for a ride in an early 1885 model. He became interested when Roper asked him to machine two cylinders for an experimental steam bicycle. (Roper later died of a heart attack while road-testing this experimental vehicle.)"2

George, at one time, had applications on file for 300 patents and approximately half of them were approved.3 Among his inventions were a hub brake on bicycles, an automatic coal furnace stoker, a pressed asphalt brick for street pavement, and a bottle-capper said to have earned him $25,000 during Prohibition.3,4 He also created a device which, by closing one garage door, would shut the other. Another invention was a hay compressor.3 By the age of 35, "Whit", as his friends called him, had successfully manufactured the world's first steam-powered automobile. His uncle Amos Whitney, who was president of Pratt &amp; Whitney in Hartford, followed his progress with great interest. Amos made a proposal to his board of directors that the firm begin producing steam automobiles based on the designs and patents of his nephew, but the board turned him down.2

He was able to obtain a patent for his automobile, but only after years of infringement legal battles with competitors, one of which resulted in the divorce of his 2nd wife, Annie. His patent was eventually sold. Throughout this period he continued to design and manufacture boilers and engines for the marine industry. In about 1900, he settled in Big Island Pond, New Hampshire. "His large boathouse, located on the edge of what is now known as the Whitney Shore, had a fully equipped machine shop. In that year he launched the Ida F on her maiden voyage from Chase's Grove. For 48 years she cruised the picturesque coves of Big Island Pond, the channels and the broad reach of the main lake loaded with happy campers and picnickers. She was 31 feet long with an 8-foot beam and she carried 25 passengers under her canopy."2

George became known throughout New England as the "Steam Man". At one time, there were eight boats on Lake Winnepesaukee with Whitney-designed engines. As late as 1956, he held master pilot's and chief engineer's licenses for operation of pleasure steamers on the New England coast. At the time of his death, he was believed to be the oldest living graduate of M.I.T. in Boston.4 He died at the age of 101 on December 4, 1963 in Manchester, New Hampshire.2,6
Most of the equipment has been sold, Russ advises, but he still has the garage and shop for repairing small engines.
Robert:

My approach here would be to check and fill in the documentation on the two families. Try to follow these families, including the siblings of the two children in question, through the census to see if any patterns emerge. Also, Asa & Ira need pages of their own - following them might bring clues to light as well. What made you place them with Family:Whitney, John (1784-1871)? We don't know why Pierce placed them with the other family, but from his outline, his details on that family were very scarce.
Compare this query with the information on Family:Whitney, David (1716-a1764). The marriage seems to match, but the parentage and later details (death location) for David do not match. Thoughts?
Hi Richard,
You may or may not remember me, I transcribed a couple of wills a year or so ago for your group. Anyway, at that time we were emailing back and forth and you thought that maybe you had a breakthrough in the Whitney line, or you were really close. Whatever happened with that? I have a relative that is very interested in all of this and I think he is willing to finance some research. Could you contact me and maybe we could talk?
Thanks,
Horace B. Whitney
Robert - please take a look at Family:Whitney, Horace B. (1830-1882). Note the m. in 1848 to Lucetta Frazier, supported by the marriage extracts. Also, in the census records, he and Lucetta are listed near other Frazier families, and the Horace Whitney, same age, married to Virginia, is also listed near these Frazier families in later census records, so I am fairly certain they are the same man.

Compare this family to Horace Burnham, son of Family:Whitney, Luther (1777-a1830). Pierce lists nothing but his first name. You added the additional information (middle name, marriage, death date) on 9/14/07, but with no sources. The wife's name and place of marriage matches, but the dates do not match at all (birth, marriage, or death). Where did you get the dates? Is this a case of two Horace B. Whitneys, perhaps father and son of uncle and nephew?
Robert:

According to Archive:Buffalo, New York, Directories, there were 3 Whitney families in Buffalo in 1832 - a joiner with no listed first name who I have been unable to identify, Family:Whitney, Zerah (1784-1873) who was only there briefly and who moved away later that same here, and a man listed as "W. A. Whitney". Now I haven't been able to locate a "W.A.", but I *did* find a W.H. Whitney who was known to be in Erie County. Family:Whitney, William Henry (1779-1853) died in Aurora, Erie Co., NY. My suspicion in that the middle initial was either a transcription error, or someone said "H" and someone else heard "A". Very, very interesting is that this family had a daughter Maria, born 5 Jan 1817. I suspect that someone else mis-transcribed the "7" in 1817 as a "2".

Note that Aurora is just outside of Buffalo. Also, there is a Portland, NY in Erie Co.
I have a WHITNEY, William, m. Sarah -----, question too!
I have a dangling William & Sarah Whitney in my family tree too, but I have a couple of census(es?) with the children as Hattie (though my family records refer to her as Harriet(she was my 2nd great grandmother)), Josephine & William.

A couple of years ago, I had a conversation with Tim and this was the note he sent me:

"From the census records you provided, it appears that you are descended from William Whitney who was born about 1819 in Massachusetts. The 1850 census in Columbus, OH shows him age 30, the 1860 census of Dayton, OH shows him age 41, and the 1870 census of Indianapolis, IN shows him age 52. I found his widow in 1880, so he died sometime between 1870-1880.

Keep in mind that his marriage record shows that he was listed as "William Whitney, Jr.". I searched for other Whitneys in 1850 and found one, a "Wm Whitney", age 50, laborer, b. Mass. He was living just 6 pages away from your William. I suspect that he could have been your William's father.

You stated on Family Talk:Whitney, Elisha (1747-1815) that you think that your William's father was Elisha Whitney (1747-1815). However, this man's son William was born 17 Jun 1788 and is listed as having died unmarried. Because of the date discrepancy, I cannot see how this could be your William's father. This Elisha did have a son Elisha (1780-1823) who also had a son named William, but he was b. 25 Jan 1810 and is also listed as having died unmarried. "

The funny thing is that I found William and Sarah, but my grandmother's records have "Eliza?" listed as Harriet's mother, only dragging me back to the whole Elisha/William/Elisha/William mystery.

Does any of this sound any alarms with you or match any of your loose ends?
Any help would be appreciated!
Robert:

I think I may have made a connection, but I need your opinion and assistance.

According to Phoenix, Family:Whitney, Elijah (1736-a1770) settled Danbury, CT after his marriage, and had a daughter Hannah Whitney. There was also a Hannah Whitney who m. (1) ----- Bass and m. (2) Elijah Whitney. Phoenix thinks this Hannah was the daughter, and doesn't offer any explanation into who this Elijah Whitney was. This Elijah and Hannah supposedly moved to New York and then to Canada.

I am wondering if perhaps Phoenix got things confused. Perhaps it was the father, Elijah, who m. (2) Hannah (Whitney)(Bass) - and not the daughter. If this Elijah did have a 2nd wife named Hannah, it would be a close match to that of Family:Whitney, Elijah (s1740-a1760). This man resided Columbia Co., NY and then went to Canada. Making the identification even greater is that, in reviewing his son Seth's Revolutionary War pension extract, it appears that Seth was supposedly b. Danbury, CT in 1759.

Note that this all ties in to the Bible record posted by Jeanne Muse back in 2002. This record states that the family was founded by Elijah and Hannah Whitney who moved to Canada. Their son Samuel settled Delhi, NY, and had a brother named Seth. This is when I found the pension record for Seth Whitney of Delhi, which listed his birthplace, tying all of the records together.
Robert:

Thank you for your reply. I've found some additional information which complicates the issue.

It appears that there was a ----- Whitney who m. Rebecca -----. They had children Hannah, Elijah, and Seth. The father died and widow Rebecca m. (2) John Boughton of Danbury, who left a will dated 1756. This couple had ch. Rebecca Boughton, b. ca. 1746, John Boughton, and James Boughton. See this and that.

I also noticed this footnote in Phoenix: "Elijah Whitney, of Danbury, relation not stated, was appointed, 3 Dec. 1760, as administrator of the estate of Seth Whitney, "late of Danbury, deceased." The inventory, dated 16 Dec. 1760, amounted to £7 2s., and indicates that Seth Whitney was an unmarried man." This couldn't have been the Seth Whitney that I have been tracking, as this man was alive until after 1840.

So it appears that we have a couple generations of unidentified Whitneys in Danbury, with the names Elijah and Seth.
Also, Asa & Ira need pages of their own - following them might bring clues to light as well. What made you place them with Family:Whitney, John (1784-1871)?

Thoughts?

I am going to see what I can do to expand this family group this evening.

The page Archive:Some_of_the_Descendants_of_John_and_Elinor_Whitney was indeed very wrong! I corrected two HTML issues which were causing it to display improperly: 1) many font calls which were not closed properly were causing tables to not be closed properly, and 2) one table had an open table row statement when it should have been a close table row. The page is now displaying properly, but I did have to remove all font statements.
Elijah Whitneys
