DEATH OF BARNEY C WHITNEY.
An Old Citizen of Athens and a Veteran Soldier Passes Away
ATHENS, Ill., Sept. 3. – [Special] – Mr. Barney C. Whitney, a prominent citizen of this city, died yesterday afternoon of dropsy of the heart, aged 63 years, 3 months and 6 days.
He was born in the state of New York and came to Illinois at the age of 21 years, settling in Menard county. After a residence of six years here, he removed to Chatham, Sangamon county, and after a residence of about nineteen years there returned to this county in 1872, since which time he has resided in this city.
About two years after coming from New York he was married to Mary Francis, daughter of Calvin Francis, one of the early settlers of Springfield and at one time connected with THE STATE JOURNAL. Of this union six children were born, three of whom died in infancy. Three children and his wife survive him. The surviving children are Dr. Charles F. Whitney of Washington D. C., O. J. Whitney and Mrs. T. E. Cantrall of this city.
Mr. Whitney was a veteran of the civil war and at the time of his death was chaplain of Pollock Post, No. 200, G. A. R., a position which he held since the organization of the post. He joined the Presbyterian church at Chatham, Ill., in 1865 and after his return to this county identified himself with the North Sangamon church. He has been honored with responsible official positions in that church since 1873 all of which he filled with credit to himself and honor to the church. He gave liberally of his means for the support of the gospel and various benevolent institutions. In his death this community has lost an honored citizen, the church a devout member, the G. A. R. a worthy officer, the wife a loving husband, the children a kind indulgent father.
The funeral will take place from the Athens M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev. D. G. Carson, pastor of the North Sangamon church, will preach the funeral discourse. The services will be in accordance with the G. A. R. ritual and will be under the auspices of Pollock post The interment will take place at Hall’s cemetery.

Funeral of Wm. F. Whitney- Personal and Other News Items.

CHATHAM, Aug. 1, - William F. Whitney whose death in this place last Thursday has already been announced in THE JOURNAL, was born in Essex county, N.Y. June 20, 1820, and was in his 68th year at the time of his death. He was a resident of the county and township about 31 years, and of this village 21 years. He was the senior partner of the grocery firm of Whitney & Son. At various times, he occupied places of trust, such as justice of the peace, notary public, deputy postmaster, occupying the latter position at his death. His funeral took place at the M.E. church last Saturday at 9a.m. the Rev. W.N. Rutledge, his pastor, officiating. A large audience was present, consisting of mourning relatives, neighbors and friends. His body was laid to rest in the Chatham cemetery.

There is a record of a grave for Hannah wife of James Whitney located right next to the graves of Benjamin and Philadelphia Bruce in the Jay Cemetery in New York.

Also on the 1840 census page in the next household listed as head is their son (John) Franklin Whitney with his family. In the household after that is Jacob Nokes, John Franklin Whitney's father in law.

On John Franklin Whitney's death entry in Crow Wing County, Minnesota his parents are listed as James & H Whitney.

Sep 1899 . . . . Also in the household is daughter Ava A. Borning, b. Oct 1878 and her husband Albert Borning, b. Apr 1873. By 1910 Joseph's wife Anna has died and he is living in her sister, Celestia Cossairt's household as a boarder. Joseph's death certificate has his father as John F Whitney, b. New York state and mother as Sarrah Noakes, b. Illinois. He died at St. Raphael's Hospital in St. Cloud, Stearns, MN, 2 Dec 1917 from General Intoxication from chronic cystitis. :Of Kimball Followed Stroke of Apoplexy; Was Old Resident Of County
Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Stickney returned from Kimball where they went to attend the funeral of the late Mrs. Ann Whitney, a sister of Mrs. Stickney, who died Friday evening following a stroke of apoplexy. The deceased was the wife of J. B. Whitney and she lived at Kimball since 1858. She was 60 years of age and was born at Bangor, Me. She moved to this country with her parents when but a young girl and has ever since made her home at Kimball. The deceased is survived by her husband and six children. The children are: Mrs. Ava Bouring (note: Borning in other records), and Benjamin, Estel, Ray, Jessie and Murno Whitney. She was a member of the Old Settlers' Association and had been an attendant at its annual gatherings for many years.

Whitney, resides at Christle, N.D. The remains will be shipped to Kimball, but no definite arrangements have been made as to the day of the funeral.

He was born July 10, 1884 in Kimball, Minn., a son of Joseph Bruce and Ann S. Winslow Whitney. He married Mabel Johnson. She died. He married Georgina Gheen on March 12, 1943 in Evanston, Wyo.
Mr. Whitney was a member of the Baptist Church.
Surviving are his widow, Lehi; Four sons and three daughters, Clarence, Sylvester, and Frank Whitney, all of Nisswa, Minn.; Don V. On July 23, 1945 she married Jesse Quinton in Dillon, Mont. She worked in the restaurant at Hotel Roges and also at the Idaho Potato Growers, retiring in 1966.
:Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Leola) Buchanan of Idaho Falls; five stepsons, Roscoe Quinton of Iona, Idaho; George Quinton and Roy Quinton, both of Idaho Falls; Syl Whitney and Frank Whitney, both of Nisswa, Minn.; five step daughters, Mrs. Del (Verna) Pack, Mrs. Jay (Bertha) Bybee, Mrs. Alma (Mildred) Cromwell, all of Idaho Falls; Mrs. Chris (Eva) Anderson of Yukiah, Calif., an Mrs. A.Q. Frank is survived by Sally, his wife of 25 years; his children, Jeff (Julie) Rheude, Fridley, and Jeanne (Luis) Amaral, Indianapolis, Ind.; his grandsons, Troy Rheude and Ryan Rheude; and a sister, Mildred Cromwell, Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Sylvester; and a sister, Dorothy.
Services entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.

BERNICE (HOWARD) WILLIAMS BORNING
HYANNIS, Mass. -- Bernice (Howard) Williams Borning, 83, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Luvern L. Borning, who died in March and Delmar Williams, who died in 1988.
Born in Peavine, Tenn., she lived for several years in Enosburg Falls, Vt., and most of her life in Cohasset, Mass., moving to Cape Cod in 1988. She enjoyed golf, walking and knitting.
Survivors include her two daughters, Carlie Silvia of Port Charlotte, Fla., Sue Eldridge of Centerville, Mass.; a step-son, Robert Borning of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters in Jamestown, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at Woodside Cemetery, Cohasset, Mass. at the convenience of the family.
Memorials may be made to Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Cape Cod, 1934 Falmouth Road, Centerville, Mass. 02632.

:Bessie Quinton, 84, Idaho Falls resident, died Aug 22, 1985, at a local hospital of causes incident to age. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in Williams-Coltrin Funeral Home. Family will meet with friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

:Elizabeth Bessie Williams Quinton, 84, Idaho Falls resident, died Aug. 21, 1985, at a local hospital of causes incident to age.
:She was born July 20, 1901 at Hibbing, Minn., dauther of Billy and Jane Williams. The family moved to Clear Lake, Minn. when she was a young child and she lived there throughout her high school years. After high school she moved to New York where she obtained a degree as a naturopath. She also lived in Minnesota and New Mexico.
:She married William Henry Champion and they were later divorced. She married Estel Whitney and they were later divorced. She moved to Idaho Falls in 1935. On July 23, 1945 she married Jesse Quinton in Dillon, Mont. She worked in the restaurant at Hotel Roges and also at the Idaho Potato Growers, retiring in 1966.
:Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Leola) Buchanan of Idaho Falls; five stepsons, Roscoe Quinton of Iona, Idaho; George Quinton and Roy Quinton, both of Idaho Falls; Syl Whitney and Frank Whitney, both of Nisswa, Minn.; five step daughters, Mrs. Del (Verna) Pack, Mrs. Jay (Bertha) Bybee, Mrs. Alma (Mildred) Cromwell, all of Idaho Falls; Mrs. Chris (Eva) Anderson of Yukiah, Calif., an Mrs. A.Q. (Dorothy) Furest of Clarkston, Wash.; 40 grandchildren, 94 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Quinton in 1976, a son, three sisters, six brothers, and a granddaughter.
:Funeral Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Williams-Coltrin Funeral Home with Leo A Williams conducting. Family will meet with friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and also one hour prior to services Saturday. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Frank H. Whitney, of Nisswa, died peacefully at home on Friday, Jan. 19, 2007. In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held.
Frank is survived by Sally, his wife of 25 years; his children, Jeff (Julie) Rheude, Fridley, and Jeanne (Luis) Amaral, Indianapolis, Ind.; his grandsons, Troy Rheude and Ryan Rheude; and a sister, Mildred Cromwell, Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Sylvester; and a sister, Dorothy.
Services entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.

Can't find him in 1870, but in 1880 he was in Maine Prairie, Stearns, MN, with his wife Anna and their 3 yr old daughter, Eva. 1890 Veterans Schedule he is in Maine Prairie, Stearns, MN, and it says he was a private in F1 Illinois Cav. for 6mo, E33 (pension file index card says E 133) Inf. for 4mo, and B11 Cav. for 6mo. In 1900 he and his family are still in Maine Prairie and his children include Benjamin F., b. Feb 1881, Estel E., b. Jul 1884, Ray N., b. Mar 1891, Jessie M., b. May 1895, and Myrna, b. Sep 1899 . . . . Also in the household is daughter Ava A. Borning, b. Oct 1878 and her husband Albert Borning, b. Apr 1873. By 1910 Joseph's wife Anna has died and he is living in her sister, Celestia Cossairt's household as a boarder. Joseph's death certificate has his father as John F Whitney, b. New York state and mother as Sarrah Noakes, b. Illinois. He died at St. Raphael's Hospital in St. Cloud, Stearns, MN, 2 Dec 1917 from General Intoxication from chronic cystitis. :THE DEATH OF MRS. ANN WHITNEY
:Of Kimball Followed Stroke of Apoplexy; Was Old Resident Of County
Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Stickney returned from Kimball where they went to attend the funeral of the late Mrs. Ann Whitney, a sister of Mrs. Stickney, who died Friday evening following a stroke of apoplexy.
The deceased was the wife of J.B. Whitney and she lived at Kimball since 1858. She was 60 years of age and was born at Bangor, Me. She moved to this country with her parents when but a young girl and has ever since made her home at Kimball. The deceased is survived by her husband and six children. The children are: Mrs. Ava Bouring (note: Borning in other records), and Benjamin, Estel, Ray, Jessie and Murno Whitney. She was a member of the Old Settlers' Association and had been an attendant at its annual gatherings for many years.

:JOS. B. WHITNEY DIED AT HOSPITAL SUNDAY
:OLD RESIDENT OF KIMBALL DEAD AFTER SHORT ILLNESS- REMAINS TO KIMBALL.
:Jos. B. Whitney, age 73 years, died Sunday afternoon at 4:30 at St. Raphael's hospital following a short illness. Complications due to advanced age was the cause of death. Mr. Whitney resided at Kimball for many years and was well known in that section. He is a brother of Mrs. S.G. Stickney (note: should be brother-in-law) formerly of this city. A son, Ray N. Whitney, resides at Christle, N.D. The remains will be shipped to Kimball, but no definite arrangements have been made as to the day of the funeral.

It says that John F Whitney was on the land from Feb. 1885 until his death in May 1888 and Jacob had been cultivating and residing upon the land since that time. Jacob is said to be 49 years old with the post office address of Ft. Ripley, Crow Wing Co., Minn.
He was born in New York.

Bessie Quinton, 84, Idaho Falls resident, died Aug 22, 1985, at a local hospital of causes incident to age. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in Williams-Coltrin Funeral Home. Family will meet with friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Bessie Williams Quinton, 84, Idaho Falls resident, died Aug. 21, 1985, at a local hospital of causes incident to age.
She was born July 20, 1901 at Hibbing, Minn., dauther of Billy and Jane Williams. The family moved to Clear Lake, Minn. when she was a young child and she lived there throughout her high school years. After high school she moved to New York where she obtained a degree as a naturopath. She also lived in Minnesota and New Mexico.
She married William Henry Champion and they were later divorced. She married Estel Whitney and they were later divorced. She moved to Idaho Falls in 1935. On July 23, 1945 she married Jesse Quinton in Dillon, Mont. She worked in the restaurant at Hotel Roges and also at the Idaho Potato Growers, retiring in 1966.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Leola) Buchanan of Idaho Falls; five stepsons, Roscoe Quinton of Iona, Idaho; George Quinton and Roy Quinton, both of Idaho Falls; Syl Whitney and Frank Whitney, both of Nisswa, Minn.; five step daughters, Mrs. Del (Verna) Pack, Mrs. Jay (Bertha) Bybee, Mrs. Alma (Mildred) Cromwell, all of Idaho Falls; Mrs. Chris (Eva) Anderson of Yukiah, Calif., an Mrs. A.Q. (Dorothy) Furest of Clarkston, Wash.; 40 grandchildren, 94 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Quinton in 1976, a son, three sisters, six brothers, and a granddaughter.
Funeral Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Williams-Coltrin Funeral Home with Leo A Williams conducting. Family will meet with friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and also one hour prior to services Saturday. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

In 1900 he and his family are still in Maine Prairie and his children include Benjamin F b. Feb 1881, Estel E b. Jul 1884, Ray. N b. Mar 1891, Jessie M b. May 1895, and Myrna b. Sept. 1899 ... Also in the household is daughter Ava A Borning b. Oct 1878 and her husband Albert Borning b. Apr 1873. By 1910 Joseph's wife Anna has died and he is living in her sister, Celestia Cossairt's household as a boarder. Joseph's death certificate has his father as John F Whitney b. New York state and mother as Sarrah Noakes b. Illinois. He died at St. Raphael's Hospital in St. Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota Dec. 2, 1917 from General Intoxication from chronic cystitis. Birth date on the death certificate says March 31, 1844 Illinois he was a retired farmer. He is buried in Maine Prairie.

THE DEATH OF MRS. ANN WHITNEY
Of Kimball Followed Stroke of Apoplexy; Was Old Resident Of County
Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Stickney returned from Kimball where they went to attend the funeral of the late Mrs. Ann Whitney, a sister of Mrs. Stickney, who died Friday evening following a stroke of apoplexy.
The deceased was the wife of J.B. Whitney and she lived at Kimball since 1858. She was 60 years of age and was born at Bangor, Me. She moved to this country with her parents when but a young girl and has ever since made her home at Kimball. The deceased is survived by her husband and six children. The children are: Mrs. Ava Bouring (note: Borning in other records), and Benjamin, Estel, Ray, Jessie and Murno Whitney. She was a member of the Old Settlers' Association and had been an attendant at its annual gatherings for many years.

The death of Jos. B. Whitney occurred yesterday afternoon at St. Raphael's hospital. Mr. Whitney was born in New York State in 1844 and later moved to Kimball, Minn. He is survived by one son, Ray, who resides at Crystal, North Dakota. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. (note: he did have other children living at this time)

Jos. B. Whitney, age 73 years, died Sunday afternoon at 4:30 at St. Raphael's hospital following a short illness. Complications due to advanced age was the cause of death. Mr. Whitney resided at Kimball for many years and was well known in that section. He is a brother of Mrs. S.G. Stickney (note: should be brother-in-law) formerly of this city. A son, Ray N. Whitney, resides at Christle, N.D. The remains will be shipped to Kimball, but no definite arrangements have been made as to the day of the funeral.

On 23 Feb 1892 a land patent was issued to the heirs of John F Whitney. The Land Entry Files had the following information: The Homestead application was entered by John F Whitney on Dec. 3, 1886 for land found in Section 25 Township 43 of Range 32. At that time John F Whitney lived in Fort Ripley, Minnesota solemnly swore that he was a widower over 21 years of age, a native born citizen of the United States. On June 5, 1891 Jacob N. Whitney filed for the final certificate for the heirs of John F Whitney. In this section, Jacob N Whitney swears that he and his father John F are native born citizens of the United States and that his father lived on the land from February 1885 until May 1, 1888 at the time of his death. He, Jacob N has resided on the land since May 1, 1888. In the Homestead Proof- Testimony of Claimant Jacob states that he is 49 years old living in Ft. Ripley, Crow Wing, Minnesota and his father, John F Whitney died in May 1888 and was 74 years old. Jacob N was born in New York and John F was born in Vermont. His father John made the homestead entry at St. Cloud land office 3 Dec. 1886. At this time Jacob's family consisted of a wife and 4 children. John F Whitney at the time of his death had 5 children, grown. There are 2 witnesses to the fact that Jacob N and John F Whitney have lived on and cultivated the land since 1886. The files also contained a notarized paper signed by Jacob N Whitney stating the names and ages of the heirs at law of John F Whitney dated June 19, 1891. Jacob N. Whitney aged 49 years, Joseph B Whitney aged 47 years, Sylvester Whitney aged 45 years, Hannah Graham aged 53, and Mary J Beckman aged 43 years.

Can't find him in 1870, but in 1880 he in Maine Prairie, Stearns, Minnesota with his wife Anna and their 3 yr old daughter, Eva. 1890 Veterans Schedule he is in Maine Prairie, Stearns, Minnesota and it says he was a private in F1 Illinois Cav. for 6mo, E33 (pension file index card says E 133)Inf. for 4mo, and B11 Cav. for 6mo. In 1900 he and his family are still in Maine Prairie and his children include Benjamin F b. Feb 1881, Estel E b. Jul 1884, Ray. N b. Mar 1891, Jessie M b. May 1895, and Myrna b. Sept. 1899 ... Also in the household is daughter Ava A Borning b. Oct 1878 and her husband Albert Borning b. Apr 1873. By 1910 Joseph's wife Anna has died and he is living in her sister, Celestia Cossairt's household as a boarder. Joseph's death certificate has his father as John F Whitney b. New York state and mother as Sarrah Noakes b. Illinois. He died at St. Raphael's Hospital in St. Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota Dec. 2, 1917 from General Intoxication from chronic cystitis. Birth date on the death certificate says March 31, 1844 Illinois he was a retired farmer. He is buried in Maine Prairie.

Can't find him in 1870, but in 1880 he in Maine Prairie, Stearns, Minnesota with his wife Anna and their 3 yr old daughter, Eva. 1890 Veterans Schedule he is in Maine Prairie, Stearns, Minnesota and it says he was a private in F1 Illinois Cav. for 6mo, E33 (pension file index card says E 133)Inf. for 4mo, and B11 Cav. for 6mo. In 1900 he and his family are still in Maine Prairie and his children include Benjamin F b. Feb 1881, Estel E b. Jul 1884, Ray. N b. Mar 1891, Jessie M b. May 1895, and Myrna b. Sept. 1899 ... Also in the household is daughter Ava A Borning b. Oct 1878 and her husband Albert Borning b. Apr 1873. By 1910 Joseph's wife Anna has died and he is living in her sister, Celestia Cossairt's household as a boarder. Joseph's death certificate has his father as John F Whitney b. New York state and mother as Sarrah Noakes b. Illinois. He died at St. Raphael's Hospital in St. Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota Dec. 2, 1917 from General Intoxication from chronic cystitis. Birth date on the death certificate says March 31, 1844 Illinois he was a retired farmer. He is buried in Maine Prairie.
