== Helen Reed Whitney ==

Hi!

I found Helen Reed, wife of Philip Richardson Whitney. They appear on the 1910 Census living on Edgehill Road, Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was an instructor, aged 31, born in Iowa, father born in Massachusetts, mother born in Vermont. His wife Helen was aged 31, born in Massachusetts, both parents born in Massachusetts. They had been married four years, and had two children: Reed Whitney, aged 3 years, and Alpa Whitney, aged 1 year, both born in Pennsylvania. Alpa's birth I found was on 10 Jan 1909, and she died in Jan 1979 in Boston, MA.

The 1920 Census shows the same family, all ten years older, living in Nether Providence Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The father's occupation is now listed as Education. I know nothing further about those two children.

Then I found Philip's birth on 31 Dec 1878, Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, son of William Lambert Whitney and his wife Alpa Matilda Nutt.

The 1900 Census shows Phillip R. Whitney, a student, aged 21 living with his parents in the first ward of Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, his father being assistant treasurer of a bank.

The 1880 Census shows Phillip R. Whitney, aged 1, living with his parents in the fourth ward of Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. The father's occupation is hard to read, but seems to be "In[---]sware dealer".

The Whitney ancestry can be traced from there back to the immigrant John Whitney, who came to America in 1635. There are actually two lines of descent from him, since cousins married along the line. If you care about the details of this, they are easily supplied.

I haven't found a record of Helen Reed's birth, although I do have access the Massachusetts vital records for 1841-1910. I looked under Reed, Read, Reade, and Reid, and found nothing. My guess is that Helen was her middle name, and the birth record is under her first name, or vice versa, or that she was one of several "(Female) Reed" children recorded, and named later. I also could not find her in the 1880 or 1900 censuses under the name Helen Reed, although the indexes may not be complete.

I know nothing of her pursuit of art, of course.

I hope this helps.
Helen Reed Whitney was my great-grandmother. I happened across this site by accident while doing some research. I know that both she and her husband Philip were artists, as well as my grandmother, Alpa. Other than family-owned paintings however, I do not know much else of their artistic careers.

I did however, recently find some additional family history that shows Helen's maiden name was Jones, not Reed. Reed was a middle name that she kept when she married Philip Richardson Whitney on April 17, 1906.
I just started reinvestigating your side of the family after being contacted by the president of the Brookline Historical Society re: Helen. Ran across this old post and I was hoping to get his message to you. (Copied below)

Hi - I'm Ken Liss, president of the Brookline Historical Society in Brookline, MA. We recently found several late 1890s photographs from Brookline High School, including four different ones of Helen Reed Jones. I thought you might like to see them and add them to your tree. You can view the pictures at this address: http://brooklinehistoricalsociety.org/archives/listPhotos.asp?mainList=archives&subList=HighSchool

I've gathered some additional information about her which has not yet been added to the page. I'd be interested in any other information you have and in contacting any living grandchildren.

Thanks. You can contact me via Ancestry or by email at kliss@brooklinehistoricalsociety.org.
