Fanny M Whitney born in 1853, daughter of Nelson Whitney, married Otis L Atherton who later became Kansas State Treasurer. I am trying to discover if they had a son, Lee O. Atherton, who married someone unknown, and had a daughter who died around age 18 to 20ish. He later married Pearl Mae Mason Atherton, predeceased her in the 1950's, and she died in May of 1985 and was buried in Texarkana, TX in the Dollarhide Cemetary. I met "Missy Pearl" in 1981 and was close friends with her until she died at age 87 or so. I was then 35. I loved her dearly, and was with her when when she passed away. She told me about "Mr. Atherton", as she called her late husband, and told me his father had been the Kansas State Treasurer. She had a quilt that had belonged to his mother, Fanny M Whitney, that was dated and signed 1867. I bought it from her in 1983 or so, because it was something special and something that meant something to her. It has the Star of David pattern in the center, and a border in the Rose of Sharon pattern, according to the report of a quilt appraiser I consulted in the late 1980's. I have always wondered if Fanny had any other children who would be interested in her quilt. I even wondered if she could have been a descendant of Eli Whitney but discovered she was born after he died or soon thereafter. The quilt is so old it still has some of the cotton seeds in the batting. I am truly looking forward to the day when I see her again. Anyway, I just wondered if the quilt would have any value to the Kansas Historical Society, or any of Fanny's other descendants if there are any. Paula K. Jones 7/31/08
