Idaho was part of the disputed "Oregon Country", obtained by the United States in 1846. It became a part of the Oregon Territory, which was formed in 1848. The northern part became part of the Washington Territory in 1853. In 1859, the rest of the area was joined to the Washington Territory. Idaho was created a territory in 1863, and a state in 1890. U.S. Census records for Idaho are available for the following years:

• 1850: should be in Oregon Territory, but it is not clear that any schedules include present Idaho
