WHITNEY, became 61st commonest name in New England. 1 BENJAMIN, tailor, Dover, York, born at Watertown 6 June 1643, son of John and Elinor. Taxed Cochecho 1666. In Mar. 1670-1 he sold to a brother the interest in the Watertown homestead given him by his father in the hope he would return to it. York 1672, grand jury 1679, Oath of Allegiance Mar. 1679-80. A 10 acre grant was laid out to him by Philip Cooper's, on which he had lived 'these several yrs.' when he and wife Jane sold, with another 10 acres, to Jonathan Sayward 24 Mar. 1684-5. York witness 1686? (York Deeds 4: 159). Of Sherborn 1687 where wife Jane died 14 Mar. 1690. Of Framingham, he married 2d at Marlboro 11 Apr. 1695 Mary Poore; died at Sherborn 1723. Children appear: Jane, b. at Watertown 29 Sept. 1669, married Jonathan Morse in Massachusetts. Benjamin, Framingham, married in Boston 7 Aug. 1705 Esther Maverick, widow of James. Jonathan, Sherborn. John, York, had 20 acre grant 1714, lived near Braveboat Harbor 1724, at Kittery 1732. List 291 [not found in this list]. He married 1st Lettice Ford (Ford family, 4th entry); children at York Mar. 1704-5- May 1719: Mary, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mercy, Mehitabel, John, and 'Old Kittery' adds Benjamin born 22 May 1725 (see History of Brunswick, p. 760). He married 2d at Kittery 14 Jan. 1730 Susannah (Barton family, 5th entry) Smith. Nathaniel, weaver, born at York 14 Apr. 1680, of Kittery bought in York 1708, York grant 1713, 'late of York' bought there 1717, deposition in May 1731 about the land John Ford lived on. List 279 [The final division of lands in York, contained in the book]. He married Sarah Ford (Ford family, 4th entry). Children recorded Jan. 1706-7- Mar. 1729-30: Nathan (see Presbury family, 3rd entry), Nathaniel, Abel, Sarah, Isaac, Amos, Lydia, Joanna.
