ELI WHITNEY (Eli, Eli, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, John, John), b. in New Haven, Conn., Nov. 24, 1820; m. in Utica, N.Y., June 17, 1845, Sarah PERKINS DALLIBAR. Eli WHITNEY, Jr., son of the inventor of the cotton gin, was born in New Haven, Conn., where he attended the public schools and was fitted for college. Entering Princeton he was graduated in the class of 1841. The following year he took his father's business, viz., the manufacture of arms for the United States government. In 1856 he ceased this branch of his manufacturing business, but resumed it again at the breaking out of the civil war in 1861, and continued it until 1866. The WHITNEY Arms Co., of which he is secretary and assistant treasurer, has manufactured thou- sands of muskets, rifles and revolvers of the most improved models. The company has also made many thousands of military arms for foreign governments, including muzzle-loading, breech-loading, magazine and repeating rifles. Mr. WHITNEY has been a member of both branches of the New Haven city government and a member of the board of public works. He was appointed one of the commissioners of the English exposition of 1862. He constructed from 1859 to 1861 the New Haven Water Works, and much of the work was done on his own credit, though built on contract for the New Haven Water Company, which organization he created. He has made many improvements in fire arms of all sorts and patented them, and has made improvements in machinery for making arms. He was on the Republican electoral ticket in Connecticut as presidential elector at large in the November election of 1892; res. 29 Elm St., New Haven, Conn. 7069. i. ELI, b. Jan. 22,1847; m.
