He died 26 June, 1783. He married, in Weston, 28 Feb 1725, Elizabeth Grant of Concord, Mass., who died before 1737. He married second in 1737, Mehitable Fuller, born at Needham, Mass. 20 April, 1720, and died before 1759. He married third, in Feb. 1759, Lydia Ballard, born at Andover, Mass. 27 Nov., 1726. Josiah Whitney lived in part of Chelmsford next to Groton, Mass. In 1713 he lived in the area that was annexed to Littleton. Upon the death of his father in 1718, he petitioned the probate court to have his uncle John of Wrentham, appointed his guardian. In 1727 he was one of the original members of the church in Westford, having been a member of the first church in Chelmsford. In 1729 he moved to Wellington, Conn. Here he purchased a farm. Later in life he lived in Bolton, Conn. By his first wife he had issue: Elizabeth who was christened 13 July 1735 Another child By his second wife he had issue: Peter, born Wellington, Conn. 10 April 1738 died 1826, married 1763 Mercy Chase. Josiah, born Wellington, Conn. 26 May 1740 Thomas, born Wellington, Conn. 7 May 1742 Miriam, born Wellington, Conn. 31 May 1744 Esther, born Wellington, Conn. 6 May 1746 Keziah, born Wellington, Conn. 24 August 1749, died soon Keziah, born Wellington, Conn. 4 April 1751 Mehitable, born Wellington, Conn. 3 July 1755, died soon By his third wife he had issue: Lydia, born Wellington, Conn. 22 Jan 1760, died 26 May 1780 Mehitable, born Wellington, Conn 6 July 1761 Josiah, born Wellington, Conn 16 Nov 1764, married Mary Loomis Sarah, born Wellington, Conn 14 April 1766, died 1782 Josiah Whitney[5] who was born Wellington, Conn 16 Nov 1764, died in Granville, Mass. 29 Oct 1792. He married at East Windsor, Conn, 26 Nov 17-83, to Mary Loomis, the daughter of Solomon and Mary (Dart) Loomis, born at Windsor, Conn 26 Jan 1765. She died at Rootstown, Ohio 14 Jan, 1850. She married her second husband, So1omon Payne in Nov 1797. Children of Josiah and Mary: Sarah, born in Conn 4 June 1785, married Beeman Chapman Mary, born in Conn 2 Oct 1787, died 1885, married at Rootstown, Ohio 22 Dec 1806, Nathan Chapman, son of Nathan and Lois (Ely) Chapman. Indiana, born in Conn 21 Aug 1789, married Calvin Allen. Josiah, born in East Cranville, Mass I May 1791, died 7 Oct. 1869, married 28 May 1818, Almira Ellsworth. Sarah Whitney, daughter of Josiah[5] was born in Conn. 4 June, 1785, and died in Rootstown, Ohio 21 Aug 1846. She married, in Conn. 26 Sept 1805, Beeman Chapman, son of Nathan and Lois (Ely) Chapman, born in Bolton, Conn. 13 March 1786, died in Rootstown, Ohio 15 June 1864. PETITION FOR A NAME CHANGE BENJAMIN WHITNEY S.44044 Revolutionary War Pension File Passed March 3, 1815 National Archives, Washington DC others to the name of Whitney Whereas a petition has been presented to the Legislature of the State of New York by Benjamin Hoar of the Town of Cambridge in the county of Washington on behalf of himself and his wife Abigail Hoar and his minor children Oliver Hoar, Polly Hoar, and Abigail Hoar; and also by Theophilus Roar, Abel Roar and Silence Hoar the adult children of the said Benjamin Roar all of the same place praying that the name of the said Benjamin and his said wife and children may be changed from that of Hoar to that of Whitney Therefore Be it enacted by the people of the State of New York represented in Senate and Assembly that the names of the said Benjamin Hoar and his wife Abigail Hoar and his said children Theophilus Hoar, Abel Hoar Silence Hoar Oliver Hoar Polly Hoar and Abigail Hoar shall be and the Same are hereby changed from that of Hoar to that of Whitney and the said Benjamin Hoar and his said wife and children and their descendants shall for ever be called and known by the name of Whitney and shall sue and be sued pleas and be impleaded by the name of Whitney and no other name until their marriage with persons of other names shall render it otherwise by the laws of this State. Daniels.] FROM THE FAMILY OF RICHARD WHITNEY OF WATERTOWN MASSACHUSETTS Richard Whitney born in Watertown 13 Jan 1660, married Elizabeth Sawtell. He died in Stow 15 Dec 1723, his will probated that same day. There is a difference of opinion between Pierce and Bond as to the wife of Richard Whitney. Bond in his Genealogies of Watertown indicates that Elizabeth Sawtell, born 3 Feb 1668, married 25 August 1691, Joseph Morse who died 24 Jan 1709, following which she married on 10 Feb 1713 Benjamin Nurse, Sr of Framingham. Pierce refers to work at the Genealogical Society of Boston that shows Elizabeth Sawtell, daughter of Jonathan, to have married Richard Whitney (Volume 13, page 197 of Middlesex Conveyances, Oct. 8, 1698). His occupation was that of a cooper. He served one year and eight months in the Revolutionary War and reached the rank of Lieutenant...although there seems to be no service record found for him. He went into the insurance business in 1880, and was a district agent. A A Whitney was born in Oswego County, New York in 1848. When 15 he joined the Army and fought in the Civil War. He attended commercial college in Oswego, New York. He went to Melrose, Mn. in 1871. He was a brother of the above A C Whitney. W B Whitney of Oswego, New York was born July 1838, and was in the Civil War. He went to the co. Stearns in 1867, north of Melrose until 1873. Ben F Whitney was of Allegany County, New York where he was born 24 Dec 1836. He was a carpenter. He removed to Illinois in 1855, and then to Princeton, Mn. in 1856, where he ran the "Log Tavern." He entered the Civil War in 1862, and returned to Princeton when it was over. In 1874 he built a feed mill and wagon shop. His son Elmer E was his partner. His older son Harley W operated the feed mill. Ben F Whitney was chairman of the board of County Commissioners. Isaac Whitney, born in Canada 9 March 1830 went to Franklin County, Vermont, and moved to Clearwater, Mm in 1880. He was also in the Civil War.
