Sandwich was created from the area known as Shawme in 1639. Land was acquired from Marshpee in 1811, 1859, and 1860. Part was given to Mashpee in 1872. A section split off as Bourne in 1884. Territory was ceded to Mashpee in 1887, and again in 1905. Part was given to Barnstable in 1916.
