Phoenix says the following:
- ". . . a farmer and carpenter . . . . They settled on a part of his father's farm, in Big Flats, and were living there in Apr 1874. He has been a justice of the peace."

They settled in Centre Street, Horseheads, NY, and were living there in 1874. He has, by a former marriage, one daughter, Sarah Gertrude Haines, born 27 Nov 1859, Millport, NY. v. Augusta Medora Whitney, b. 19 May 1852, NY; d. 22 Oct 1867, Big Flats, NY; bur. in the family cemetery on Sing-Sing Creek, Big Flats, NY. vi. Arthur Elmer Whitney, b. 24 Aug 1861, NY; d. 29 Jan 1883.
