Asa5 Whitney (Nathan4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Nathan4 and Elizabeth (Bailey)(Melcher) Whitney, was born 17 Dec 1754, Biddeford, ME, and died 17 Dec 1806, Gorham, ME.

Marriage intentions were published 15 Apr 1775, Gorham, ME, for him and his first wife Patience Weston,[1] daughter of Thomas and Abigail (-----) Weston. She was born 3 Dec 1751, and died 23 Dec 1784, Gorham, ME.

He married secondly, 14 Jul 1785, Gorham, ME, Phebe (Hopkins) Davis,[2] daughter of Constant and Phebe (Paine) Hopkins. She was born 17 May 1759, Truro, MA, and died 17 Apr 1853, Bridgton, ME. She had married firstly, 21 Nov 1780, Truro, MA, Elijah Davis "of Gorham, ME", son of Prince and Sarah (Coleman) Davis. She was a "Mayflower" descendant in the following lines: Phebe Hopkins, Constant, Caleb, Caleb, Giles, Stephen; and Phebe Hopkins, Phebe Paine, Jonathan, Thomas, Mary Snow, Constance Hopkins, Stephen. Elijah Davis was a Revolutionary War veteran, and Phebe received a pension from the U.S. government:

From Revolutionary War Pension File of Elijah Davis, M-804, Roll 752; National Archives Building, Washington, DC
Widow's Benefit Application filed 13 Sept 1838 from Bridgton, Maine, witnessed by her grandsons, Jonathan and Asa P. Whitney. They are the sons of Rev. George W. Whitney. Her maiden name is Phebe Hopkins, and she married Elijah Davis 21 Nov 1783 in Truro. There is a marriage certificate in the file to substantiate that. Elijah died 5 Oct 1783. She then married Asa Whitney 14 Jul 1785. Asa died 17 Dec 1805 in Gorham, ME. Elijah was the son of Prince and Sarah Davis of Gorham. He had a brother David Davis. Hard to understand, but Elijah may have died in Oxford, ME.

The material on this man and his family comes principally from "Maine Families in 1790", and was contributed by Vincent A. Mackesy, 346 Shore Road, Monument Beach, MA 02553.
