Family:Whitney, Benjamin (1802-1874)
Benjamin Whitney, parentage unknown, was born 14 Nov 1806, Vermont, and died 8 Feb 1874, Yates County, NY, of heart disease. He is buried in Brookside Cemetery, Shortville, NY. Here's a photograph of his gravestone.
He married 15 Oct 1837, Caroline Elizabeth (Eliza) Hall, (Vermont, Vital Records, 1720-1908), daughter of Thomas and Annie (Ralston) Hall. She was born 27 Feb 1815, Steuben County, NY, and died July 1897, Mt. Pleasant, MI
Leaving Vermont at the age of 13, he spent some time in Batavia, NY, and then went to Ohio and lived in Rainsville [sic: should be Painesville] several years. He then settled in Ontario Co., NY, where he followed blacksmithing and farming, and for a time was employed in driving stage for his father.
Mr. Whitney enlisted 17 Feb 1864, in Co. E, Eighth Mich. Vol. Inf., and served 18 months. He fought at the Wilderness, Cold Harbor and in numerous other engagements; and while in a skirmish near Petersburg he was shot through the left hand by a minie ball. With other wounded and disabled men, he walked ten miles to City Point, VA, where his wound was dressed and he was sent to Washington, DC, and afterwards to Philadelphia. He was assigned to the invalid corps, where he remained till 7 Aug 1865, when he was discharged and returned to his home.

John Francis.
His father, name unknown, apparently moved from Vermont to either Batavia, Genesee Co., or Ontario Co., NY, about 1815.
Although he was in Hopewell, NY, he appears to not be related to Jonas Whitney, one of the early settlers of Hopewell, NY. Our record of Jonas's children doesn't include a Benjamin, nor do the families of his brothers.
Although the Benjamin Whitney, son of Family:Whitney, Samuel (s1775-1808) appears to be accounted for by a descendant, this Samuel was known to have moved from VT to Ontario Co., NY. However, this appears to have been in 1802, earlier than the 1815 that this Benjamin appears to have moved. This family could be related.
He could be the son of Benjamin6 Whitney, aged 0-9 in the 1810 census of Tunbridge, VT, and 18-25 in the 1820 census of Rush, Ontario Co., NY. His family is not fully known, so there is no proof.
