Buel7 Whitney (Orange6, Daniel5, Daniel4, Jonathan3, Jonathan2, John1), son of Orange6 and Esther (Walbridge) Whitney, was born 10 Oct 1821, St. Lawrence Co., NY, and died 7 Nov 1875, Franklin, OH.

He married 8 Oct 1843, Portage Co., OH, Almira Stratton, daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Olin) Stratton. She was born 15 Feb 1825, Bennington, VT, and died 26 Mar 1906, Kent, OH. She married secondly 30 Jan 1878, Portage Co., OH, George Bradley.

There are sources that conflict regarding the year that Buel was born. His headstone in Standing Rock Cemetery, Kent, OH, indicates he was born 10 Oct 1818. However, all census records would indicate that he was born after 1820, probably circa 1822. For his record, I have used the day and month from his headstone and 1821 as the year which seems to fit the census records and other accounts.

Buel enlisted with the Union Army 8 Jun 1862, and served with the Company I, Ohio 104th Infantry Regiment as a private. He was promoted to Full Chaplin on 10 Sep 1864 and mustered out in Greensboro, NC, 17 Jun 1865. Buel was captured near Burnt Hickory, GA in late May 1864 and released in a prisoner exchange in Sep 1864. A further account of his role as a chaplin and his capture can be found in this online article.

Children of Buel and Almira (Stratton) Whitney:

i. Alice Jane8 Whitney, b. circa 1845, IL.
ii. Emma Whitney, b. circa 1863, MI.
