"Ensign" Daniel4 Whitney (Benjamin3, John2, John1), son of Benjamin3 and Abigail (Hagar) Whitney, was born 17 Jul 1700, Watertown, MA,[1] and died before 28 Mar 1775, Watertown, MA.[2]

He married, before 1723, Dorothy Tainter, daughter of Simon and Johanna (Stone) Tainter. She was born 20 May 1706, Watertown, MA, and died 7 Aug 1788, Watertown, MA, aged 82.

He was a selectman of Watertown in 1751, 1755, 1757, 1759, 1760, 1761, and 1762.

He is not found on the 1771 Massachusetts Tax Valuation List because the town of Watertown is not included.

He left a will on 1 Jun 1770 at Watertown, MA; will of Daniel Whitney of Watertown, gentleman; wife Dorothy; daughter Abigail Fowle; son-in-law John Woodbridge, farm in South Hadley whereon he dwells; dau. Mary Woodbridge, his wife; son Joshua Whitney, farm in Worcester whereon he now dwells; children of my late son benjamin Whitney, dec.; son Elisha Whitney; other daughters Joanna Cook, Dorothy Coolidge, Grace Bisco, and Lucy Dana; residue to three sons Simon, Daniel, and Israel Whitney, executors; witnesses, Edward Marrett, John Hobby, Jon. Sewall.

His inventory was taken at Watertown, MA by Moses Stone, Samuel Soden, and Capt. Phinehas Stearns.

At Watertown, MA, Samuel Fisk, Esq., of Watertown, and Eliphalet Robbins, of Cambridge, were appointed guardians of the children of Israel Whitney.

His will was proved 28 Mar 1775, Watertown, MA.

On 20 May 1775, Watertown, MA, an addition to his inventory was taken by Abr. Fuller, Jona. Brown, and Saml. Barnard. On 4 Sep 1776, South Hadley, MA, an addition to inventory was taken by Joseph White, David Ness[?], and Josiah Henry at South Hadley. On 13 Jan 1777, Watertown, MA, a division made to widow Dorothy Whintey, Simon Whitney, and Daniel Whitney was allowed. On 4 May 1778, Watertown, MA, a petition for a new appraisement was requested by John Cooke, Joanna Cooke, Dorothy Coollidge, Benja. Dana, Henry Whitney, Josiah Bisco. On 18 May 1778, Watertown, MA, appeal bond was posted. On 30 May 1781, Watertown, MA, a receipt was signed by Lucy Fowle for her share of her grandfather's estate. On 6 May 1782, Watertown, MA, a receipt was signed by Jereh. Fowle for a share of grandfather Capt. Daniel Whitney's estate. On 26 Feb 1784, Watertown, MA, a receipt was signed by Samuel Fowle for a share of grandfather Capt. Daniel Whitney's estate. On 4 Nov 1788, Watertown, MA, a reappraisal of his estate was ordered. On 7 Nov 1788, Watertown, MA, an agreement was made between Simon Whitney, Daniel Whitney, and sister Mary Woodbridge of South Hadley. On 2 Apr 1789, Watertown, MA, the heirs quitclaimed to Joshua Whitney of Worcester their interest in their father's estate; Simon Whitney; Daniel Whitney; Samuel Fisk as guardian; John Cooke; Dorothy Coolidge; Eliphalet Robbins as guardian; Elisha Whitney; Mary Woodbridge; Lucy Dana. On 7 Apr 1790, Watertown, MA, an appraisal and distribution after the death of Dorothy mentions "land of the said Dorothy, that was given her by her late father Simon Tainter, deceased." On 14 Apr 1790, Watertown, MA, distribution was made to Samuel Fisk, guardian of two children of Israel Whitney, deceased, vizt. Israel and Dorothy; Eliphalet Robbins, guardian of two children of Israel Whitney, deceased, vizt. Jemima and Mary; Elisha Whitney; Dorothy Coolidge; Joshua Whitney; Josiah Bisco, guardian of the children of Grace Bisco, deceased, vizt. Daniel Whitney Bisco, Thomas Bisco, Leonard Bisco, Grace Bisco; Benjamin Dana and Lucy his wife; John Cooke and Joanna his wife; Benjamin Whitney; Josiah Boyden; Lydia Boyden; [illegible]; Stephen Cook and Israel Cook, children of Joanna Cook; Abigail Fowle. On 28 Feb 1792, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by David Fairbanks for wife Jemima, daughter of Israel Whitney. On 4 Mar 1795, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by Nathll. Kingsbury, attorney for Polly Whitney, daughter of Israel Whitney.

On 3 Sep 1788, Watertown, MA, adminstration on the esate of Dorothy Whitney, late of Watertown, widow, intestate, decd., was granted to Simon Whitney, yeoman, of Watertown, with Daniel Whitney, yeoman, and David Stone, yeoman, both of Watertown, sureties. On 4 Nov 1788, Watertown, MA, her inventory was taken by Jona Brown, Phinehas Stearns, and Saml. White. On 8 Sep 1790, Watertown, MA, a power of attorney was given by Elizabeth and Henry Whitney, great-grandchildren of the decease by her grandson Henry Whitney, also deceased, to Samuel Fisk of Watertown. On 8 Oct 1790, Watertown, MA, her estate was settled on Simon Whitney to distribute it to sisters Abigail, Joanna, Mary, Dorothy, and Lucy; brothers Daniel, Joshua, and Elisha; surviving children of brother Benjamin, decd.; surviving children of Henry, son of brother Benjamin, also decd., vizt. Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Henry; surviving children of brother Israel, decd., vizt. Israel, Jemima, Mary, and Dorothy; surviving children of sister Grace, decd., vizt. Daniel, Thomas, Leonard, and Grace. On 15 Oct 1790, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by daughter Mary Woodbridge. On 15 Dec 1791, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by Samuel Fisk, guardian of Israel and Dorothy Whitney, children of son Israel. On 14 May 1792, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by son Elisha Whitney. On 30 May 1792, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by David Fairbanks for wife Jemima, daughter of son Israel. On 3 Aug 1792, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by daughter Lucy Dana. On 21 Sep 1792, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by daughter Dorothy Coolidge. On 17 Oct 1792, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by daughter Abigail Fowle. On 1 Nov 1793, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by son Joshua Whitney. On 14 Apr 1794, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by Josiah Warren for the full share of Lucy Dana in her late Mother's Dower of Thirds which was set off to my said Mother out of my late Father decd.'s estate. On 24 Mar 1796, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by Stephen Cook and Israel Cook, administrators of the estate of John Cook, and sons of daughter Joanna Cook. On 16 Mar 1799, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by Mary Whitney, daughter of son Israel. On 5 Jun 1799, Watertown, MA, a receipt was given by son Daniel Whitney.

Pierce says the following:[8]

He was in the Revolutionary army, in the Watertown company, commanded by Capt. BARNARD. Was selectman 1751-55-59-60-61-62.
