Geoffrey Whitney, parentage unknown, but brother of ----- Whitney (s1525-b1574).

Geffrey Whitney, the father of the poet, was a leasehold tenant of Richard Cotton, of Cambermere, for a farm situate at Ryles Green in the hamlet of Lightwood, in the township of Wilkesley, in the parish of Audlem, certainly from 1558, and probably from an earlier date, until the year of his death 1587. The farm-house was then called Wetwell, but that name, which is not found in later records, is now unknown in the locality. Geffrey Whitney is not only mentioned frequently in the court-rolls of Wilkesley but on the following separate papers preserved among the documents at Combermert:
In the Bailiff's Accounts for 14 Novr. 1558, among the list of "somes pd vpon bill's" is
"Land, Geoffrey Whitney to pay his rent ..... xxx s iiij d"
In the Taxation of the Subsidy, for the first payment, 24 Feb. 1567
"Geoffrey Whitney" is assessed at "16d."
In an assessment of Wilkesley township made for providing furniture [i.e. armour] of a man [soldier] into Ireland, dated 10 March 1567 - Geffrey Whitney is entered as resident in the hamlet of Lightwood, and assessed at £3. 3s. 4d; his war-tax being 9 1/2d.

Some references state that he lived in Coole Pilate, Cheshire, England, but this may have been confused with Coole Hall, Newhall Township, Wrenbury Parish.

He is perhaps the Geoffrey Whitney associated with Family:Whitney, Thomas (s1500-1558).

Children of Geoffrey Whitney:

i. Geoffrey Whitney, b. ca. 1548, probably Coole Pilate, Cheshire, England.
ii. Brooke Whitney, b. say 1550, living in 1600, of Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Will PCC 100 Byrde. He married 11 July 1585, St. Botolph Bishopsgate, London, Magdalen/Mawdlen Stacey.
iii. Isabella Whitney, living in 1600. Poetess. For more information see her biography. She may be the daughter who married one ----- Eldershae and had two children.
v. Anne Whitney, m. ----- Baron.
vi. (daughter) Whitney, younger daughter.
vii. (daughter) Whitney, younger daughter.
viii. Rondle Whitney, mentioned in his brother Brooke's will. This could have been a Mr. Arundel, in which case there would have been no son Rondle here

Notes

He was probably a grandson of Thomas Whitney of Coole Pilate, who m. Anne Brooke, given that he named a son "Brooke Whitney."
