His obituary:

"Again we have to record the sudden death of a prominent citizen of Milford. George Gordon Whitney died on Wednesday morning, September 15th. Mr. Whitney had been in poor health for some time, and owing to his condition had resigned his position as bookkeeper in the Milford National Bank, about two weeks previous. He had been on the street, Tuesday, apparently as well as usual. Wednesday morning he was getting ready to go to the postoffice to mail some letters, when Mrs. Whitney, hearing an unusual noise went in the room and found him lying on the bed, and before medical aid could be secured he had breathed his last. Heart disease was the immediate cause.
"George Whitney came to Milford from Morris in 1886, having been a merchant for some years. He with the late J. P. Kenyon of Morris opened a general mercantile store in the Wilber block under the firm name of Kenyon & Whitney, which was continued until about twelve years ago, when he retired from active business. Later he accepted the position in the Bank which he helped to found and of which he was a director. Mr. Whitney enjoyed the respect of the people. He was a good citizen. He was born December 8, 1852, and was married June 12, 1883 to Miss Matilda Yates of Morris, who with three daughters, Mrs. Nellis Bronner of Little Falls, Mrs. Paul Schreiber of Port Washington and Miss Josphine Whitney of Brooklyn are left to mourn a kind husband and father. The funeral was heald at the house Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. N. B. Ripley offiating. Burial in our village cemetery."[3]
