Horace Burnham8 Whitney, (Luther7, Nathaniel6, Samuel5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Luther7 and Jerusha (Burnham) Whitney, born 13 Sep 1806, Lansingburg, NY, and died 21 Sep 1831, Mississippi River 40 miles above Fort Armstrong (also reported as Jun 1835[1]).

He married, 23 Dec 1828, Adams Co., IL, Lucetta Frazier,[2] daughter of George and Polly (Blackburn) Frazier. She was born 29 Jul 1809, Harrison City (now Cynthiana), KY, and died after 1860. She married, second, James J. Fletcher, born about 1805, KY, and died about 1847. She possibly remarried a third time and had a daughter born about 1848 named Sarah Todd.

"Horace B. Whitney - Was the son of Luther Whitney, and brother to Sheriff Whitney. Died in 1835, as appears on records of Probate Court of June in that year."[3]

Horace the son of Luther and Jerusha (Burnham) Whitney and brother of Sheriff Whitney died aged 25 years and 8 months by drowning in the Mississippi River about 40 miles above Fort Armstrong according to Lucetta's Bible where his birth date and place are also listed by Lucetta's own hand. Horace and Lucetta first lived in Montebello Township in 1829 where Horace served on the petit court before moving to Rocky Run Township. The marriage license states he was married in Adams Co., IL, by a justice of the peace.

Children of Horace Burnham8 and Lucetta (Frazier) Whitney:

i. Horace Burnham9 Whitney, b. 24 May 1830,[4] IL; m. Virginia Woodworth.
ii. Lucetta Whitney, b. 11 Sep 1831, IL; d. after 1900; m. 18 Feb 1852, Adams Co., IL, Erasmus D. Duncan.

Children of James J. and perhaps Lucetta (Frazier)(Whitney) Fletcher:

i. George Washington Fletcher, b. 4 May 1835, Adams Co., IL; d. 26 May 1907, Rocky Run, IL; m.(1) 29 Sep 1859, Carthage, IL, Elizabeth C. Bolt; m.(2) 20 Jun 1872, Hancock Co., IL, Mary Jane Caldwell; had six children by 1870 Census.
ii. John Fletcher, b. Oct 1836, Lima, IL;[5] d. after 1900; m. 3 Aug 1868, Hancock Co., IL, Mary J. Snyder; had one child by 1870 Census.

Children of ----- and possibly Lucetta (Frazier)(Whitney)(Fletcher) Todd [but see notes below]:

i. Sarah Todd, b. ca. 1848, IL; living with mother Lucetta and other siblings of Horace and Lucetta Whitney, and George and John Fletcher according to 1860 Census of Rocky Run Township, Lima, IL.

Notes

The 1850 Census of Hancock Co., IL, p. 424, lists George W. Todd, 33, Farmer, TN; Phebe A. Todd, 28, TN; Mary L. Todd, 3, IL; and Sarah M. Todd, 1, IL. This makes it very likely that the above Sarah Todd was NOT a child of Lucetta. Her putative parents were George W. and Phebe Ann (Headon) Todd, who also appear in the 1860 Census in La Harpe, Hancock Co., IL, with Mary, 13, and younger children. Why Sarah was living with the Whitney/Fletcher family, and not with her parents, is a mystery.
