James Edward Whitney (Thomas Hendly, Elisha), son of Thomas Hendly and Salome P. (Kniffin) Whitney, was born 5 Nov 1836, Springfield, NS, and died 21 May 1911.

He married, 23 Jan 1861, Newburyport, MA, Susan Simpson, daughter of John and Susan (Swift) Simpson.[1] She was born 5 Jun 1833, Newburyport, MA, and died 16 Mar 1928.

He was a machinist, and lived on Sycamore St., Somerville, MA.

i. Howard Simpson Whitney, b. 9 Feb 1862, MA, or 5 Feb 1863, Newburyport, MA;[2] d. 5 Aug 1862, MA.
ii. James Edward Whitney, b. 16 Mar 1865, Newburyport, MA; m. Harriet M. Titcomb.
iii. Annie Maude Whitney, b. 1 Mar 1868, MA; d. after 1940, then living in Newburyport, MA.
iv. Mary Alden Whitney, b. 11 Jan 1870, MA; d. after 1940, then living in Newburyport, M
v. Faith Lillian Whitney, b. 30 May 1873 "Faith W.", Somerville, MA;[3] d. 12 Oct 1885, Newburyport, MA, aged 12 years 4 months 13 days, of diphtheria.[4]
vi. Winnifred Elizabeth Whitney, b. 4 Aug 1875, MA; d. 31 Jul 1877, Somerville, MA, aged 1 year 11 months 27 days, of diarrhea and teething.[5]
vii. 6} d. after 1940, then living in Newburyport, MA.
