Notes

Trinity, ME, apparently does not and never did exist, despite the statement by Pierce that Joel's third marriage occurred there. That marriage is recorded as occurring 23 May 1840, Waldo Co., ME. Two towns in Waldo County had names similar to Trinity: Unity and Liberty. Since Betsey Chase was born in Unity, ME, and her first husband Benjamin Ayer, Jr., was enumerated there in the 1830 census, this is undoubtedly the correct location.
