Joel W.7 Whitney (Abel6, Elijah5, Elijah4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Abel6 and Phebe (Hopkins) Whitney, was born about 1818, Williamstown, VT, and died 6 May 1863, New Bedford, MA, aged 45 years, of diphtheria, res. Bellville, peddler.[1]

He married firstly, 25 Feb 1849, Williamstown, VT, Hannah L. Russ, both of Williamstown, VT.[2] She was born about 1829, VT, and died 21 Mar 1850, Williamstown, VT, aged 21 years. She was buried in West Hill Cemetery, Williamstown, VT.[3]

He married secondly, 6 Jul 1854, New Bedford, MA, Sarah Ann Taber,[4] daughter of Peter and Ruhama (Jones) Taber. She was born 5 Nov 1827, New Bedford, MA, and died 22 Aug 1909, Pembroke, MA, aged 81 years 9 months 17 days, of chronic nephritis.[5]

Children of Joel W.7 and Hannah (Russ) Whitney, if any, unknown. Since she died 13 months after marriage, there probably were none.

Children of Joel W.7 and Sarah Ann (Taber) Whitney:

i. Joel Lyman8 Whitney, b. 23 Mar 1855, New Bedford, MA;[6] d. 5 Nov 1878, at sea; he was a Machinist with Fire Dept Engine 2, and a member of Militia, Company G. On 10 Jul 1876 he signed on as member of the crew of Whaling Bark "Minnesota" of New Bedford, MA. On 5 Nov 1878 he was killed as Boat Steerer while killing a whale in the Indian Ocean.
ii. Charles Frederick Whitney, b. 28 Feb 1857, MA (record not found); d. 21 Jul 1943, Sacramento, CA; m. 3 Jul 1887, Chico, Butte Co., CA, Susan Catherine Dugan, b. 29 Sep 1870, CA, and d. 10 Jul 1901, CA. On 4 Dec 1871 he signed on as member of the crew of Whaling Bark "Camilla" of New Bedford, MA. Between 1871 and 1876 they sailed around South America on "Camilla", and he left ship in San Francisco. In 1876 the bark "Camilla" was iced in in the arctic and abandoned by the crew. See a public tree at Ancestry.com, and another.
iii. James P. Whitney, b. 19 Dec 1858, New Bedford, MA [given name omitted];[7] d. after 1920, then unmarried.
iv. Dwight M. Whitney, b. 23 Dec 1861, New Bedford, MA [given name omitted];[8] d. 28 or 25 May 1863, New Bedford, MA, aged 1 year 5 months 2 days, of chronic croup.[9]
