John Jackson8 Whitney (Sampson7, Nathan6, David5, Nathan4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Sampson7 and Jane (Long) Whitney, was born 19 Jan 1840, OH or VA, and died 15 Dec 1899, New Philadelphia, OH. He is buried in East Avenue Cemetery, New Philadelphia, OH.[1]

He married, 24 Apr 1873, West Wheeling, Belmont Co., OH, Amanda J. Chalfont, daughter of Francis M. and Josephine Chalfont. She was born about 1856, VA, and died 15 Mar 1911, Cleveland, OH.

Served in Civil War, Private, Company M, 5th Ohio Cavalry.

John J. Whitney enlisted as a private in Co. A, 1st California Cavalry, on 8 Feb 1865. He was mustered out on 22 May 1866. He and Amanda received pensions from the U.S. government.
