He married 2 Sep 1891, Seneca, KS, Laura Jane Shafer, daughter of William A. and Mary Marinda (Guffy) Shafer. She was born 30 Aug 1873, Valley, KS, and died 27 Oct 1909, Pawnee Co., OK.

After the death of John and Laura, it appears the children lived with and/or were adopted by neighbors.

v.	Orville Shaffer Whitney, b. 14 Nov 1902, Pawnee Co., OK; m. Leora Isabelle Cox, d. 15 Aug 1990, Millville, CA.
