John Smith6 Whitney (Thomas5, Thomas4, Eleazer3, Thomas2, John1), son of Thomas5 and Ann (Gould) Whitney, was born 4 Dec 1768, Shrewsbury, MA,[1] was baptized 12 Mar 1769, Westborough, MA,[2] and died "in the west".

He "of Westboro" married, 24 Feb 1794, Shrewsbury, MA, or 25 Feb 1794, Grafton, MA, Susanna Knowlton, "of Shrewsbury",[3] daughter of William and Hannah (Hastings) Knowlton, and sister of Judge Knowlton, of Massachusetts. She was born 15 Jan 1775, Templeton, MA, and died 23 Aug 1847, aged 72. Possibly she was the "widow Susannah Whitney" who married, 27 Dec 1827, Dana, MA, Barnabus Rich of Enfield.[4] Barnabas Rich's wife was 50-59 in the 1830 census of Dana, MA, which agrees with her age.

He resided Westborough, Shrewsbury, and Petersham, MA.

He bought land in New Salem in 1802, and sold it in 1802 through 1805.[5]
