Dea. Joseph Merriam7 Whitney (Ebenezer6, Zachariah5, Zachariah4, Ebenezer3, Richard2, John1), son of Ebenezer6 and Lavinia (Burnham)(Potter) Whitney, was born 11 Jan 1824, Montague, MA, and died 5 Jan 1888, Erving, MA, aged 63 years 11 months 25 days, of pneumonia.[1]

He "of Shutesbury" married, 17 Jun 1845, New Salem, MA, Mary A. Hunt[2] of New Salem, daughter of Job and Gratia (Newton) Hunt. She was born 10 Jan 1828, New Salem, MA, and died 1 Feb 1892, Montague, MA (recorded Revere, MA), aged 64 years, of cancer.[3]

He was born in Montague and when young was apprenticed to his uncle Nathan Burnham of Monson, MA, to learn the tailor's trade, where he served his time and continued to work as journeyman for a time and afterward engaging in business on his own account in different localities. In 1874 he disposed of his business and engaged in farming. In 1880 he purchased a farm in Erving, MA, near the manufacturing village of Miller's Falls, where he afterward resided until his death from pneumonia in 1888. He early in life connected himself with the Baptist church, but on moving to Erving he joined the Congregational church at Miller's Falls of which church he was an active member and deacon at his death. He was a man much esteemed in the community in which he resided. He resided Montague and Erving, MA.
