Josiah Whitney, parentage unknown but apparently the brother of the Jeremiah Whitney who d. 1781, Buckingham Co., VA. One possibility for his lineage is (perhaps Jeremiah4, Joshua3, David2, Samuel1), perhaps son of Jeremiah4 Whitney and an unknown wife, He was born before 1755,[1] died after 1800.[2]

In 1775, Josiah Whitney is listed as one of many people who purchased items in the estate sale of Joseph Rhodes of Duplin County, NC.[3]

Was he related to the Hannah Whitney who married Jeremiah Bass sometime before 1770? They had children born 1770 to 1783, Duplin County, NC.[4]

Sampson County was formed from Duplin County in 1784.

Was he related to the Elizabeth Whitney who married Isham Royal of Sampson Co., NC? He was b. 1760 and d. 1833. They had ch: Whitney Royal, b. 1792, d. 1869, m. 1805, Sarah Martin, in the War of 1812; John Royal, b. 1794, d. 1862, m. 1802, Susan Benton.[5]

In 1784, he was listed as owning 400 acres in Sampson County, NC.[6]

Children of Josiah and ----- (-----) Whitney:

i. (son) Whitney, b. 1774-1784.[7] Possibly Francis, b. say 1780, d. after 1830.
ii. (son) Whitney, b. 1774-1784.[8] Possibly Josiah, b. 1775-1780, d. after 1830.

Could one of his sons have been Family:Whitney, Francis (s1780-a1830) who may have been from NC and who resided in MS and LA?
