Rev. Sampson7 Whitney (Nathan6, David5, Nathan4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Nathan6 and Eunice (Cottle) Whitney, was born about 1807, ME, and died 26 Mar 1868, Pultney, Goshen Township, Belmont Co., OH.

He married 2 Sep 1829, West Alexander, PA, Jane "Jennie" Long, daughter of William and Hannah (Davis) Long. She was born 28 Mar 1813, Pultney Township, Belmont Co., OH, and died 15 Feb 1896, West Wheeling or Pultney, Belmont Co., OH. She was buried in Linwood Cemetery, Lansing, Belmont Co., OH.

Sampson was a Civil War veteran. His widow received a pension from the U.S. government. He served between 1 Oct 1862 and 16 Apr 1863, in West Virginia Exempt Infantry Independent Battalion, Company A.

On 18 Aug 1853, he purchased real estate "alongside" West Wheeling, OH from Martin L. Todd. (Vol. 38, p. 199 Belmont County Records).

On 13 Aug 1864, he and wife Jane Whitney sold the same property "adjoining " West Wheeling, OH, to Jacob Moore of Wheeling, WV (Vol. 49, p. 324, Belmont County Records).

On 5 Jan 1869, she purchased a 24 acre parcel in Goshen Township, Belmont County, OH, from William Long (deed to "my beloved daughter" Jane Whitney, in consideration of agreement of Jane to care for her "aged father" for life). John J. Whitney was a witness (Vol. 55, p. 174, Belmont County Records).

On 19 Oct 1869, she sold that Goshen Township parcel to Thomas Orr (deed from Jane Whitney and William Long) (Vol. 56, p. 290, Belmont County Records).
