Samuel Whitney, parentage unknown (but see Notes below), was born about 1812, ME, and died after 1870.

He married firstly, 17 Feb 1840, Bowdoinham, ME, Elizabeth Merryman.[1] She was born about 1821, ME, and died between 1850 and 1851.

Intentions of marriage were published 20 Dec 1851, Durham ME, for him and Louisa Jordan, both of Durham.[2] He married secondly, 8 Jun 1852, Durham, ME, Louisa Jordan, both of Durham.[3] She was born about 1818, ME, and died after 1870. She was probably the Louisa Jordan, daughter of Benjamin Allen and Betsey (Adams) Jordan, who was born 7 May 1819, Gorham, ME.

They lived in Durham and Lewiston, ME, where he was a farmer.

Children of Samuel and Elizabeth (Merryman) Whitney:

i. Jane Whitney, b. ca. 1841, ME; d. aft. 1850; no further record found.
ii. Nathan Whitney, b. ca. 1845, ME; d. aft. 1850; no further record found.
iii. Dianna Whitney, b. ca. 1847, ME; d. aft. 1850; no further record found.

Children of Samuel and Louisa (Jordan) Whitney:

iv. William F. Whitney, b. ca. 1855, ME; m.(1) Isabella A. Sherman; m.(2) Lauretta (Kelly) Fletcher.

Notes

He may be a son of Benjamin5 and Mary/Polly (Varnum) Whitney, who had a son Samuel6 Whitney, b. 1801, who may have died soon. If so, there could be a second Samuel, b. ca. 1812. In the 1850 census, the latter is living with a Susan Whitney, b. ca. 1821, likely his sister-in-law Susan (Trufant) Whitney, and a Mary Whitney, b. ca. 1776, likely his mother Mary/Polly (Varnum) Whitney. The fact that that Samuel named a daughter Diana seems significant, as that was the name of a putative sister.
