Samuel Butterick8 Whitney (Abijah7, Abijah6, Joseph5, John4, Joseph3, John2, John1), son of Abijah7 and Anne (Lawrence) Whitney, was born 17 Oct 1814, Weston, MA, and died 13 May 1867, Waltham, MA, aged 52 years 6 months, of fever, merchant.[1]

He married, 5 Jun 1845, Waltham, MA, Mary Watson Crehore,[2] daughter of Elisha and Mary Watson (Stearns) Crehore. She was born 22 Aug 1823, Waltham, MA, and died after 1880.

He was born in Weston where he always resided; was in the real estate business. His ancestors bought a farm in Weston in 1699, which continued in the family till after the death of Henry Whitney in 1873. He has the deed of this land sold to Joseph Whitney in 1699. Also other deeds - land to John Whitney, of Watertown, in 1706; Benjamin Whitney and Elizabeth Whitney, land to John Whitney, in 1713; John W. to Joseph W., in 1749; William Whitney and Sarah W. to Joseph Whitney, in 1772; Abijah and Rebecca Whitney to Abijah Whitney, 1828; resided Weston, MA.

i. Elisha Crehore9 Whitney, b. 12 Mar 1846, Waltham, MA;[3] lost at sea, May 1866.
ii. Mary Watson Whitney, b. 10 Sep 1847, Waltham, MA;[4] d. 20 Jan 1921, Waltham, MA, of pneumonia; unmarried. Prof. of astronomy at Vassar college, Poughkeepsie, NY. Among the first women to gain celebrity as astronomers was Maria Mitchell, of Nantucket, MA. She was born there in 1818 and in 1865 she became professor of astronomy at Vassar college. In 1881 Miss Mary W. Whitney was called to be her assistant and, on the resignation of Miss Mitchell, she was given the professorship of astronomy and the directorship of the Vassar observatory. Miss Whitney graduated from the institution in 1868, having studied under Miss Mitchell, with whom she observed the solar eclipse of 1869. In 1872 she assisted her in determining the latitude of the Vassar observatory, after which she attended lectures by Professor Pierce at Harvard, and, going to Europe in 1874, continued her studies in astronomy and mathematics at the University of Zurich. iii. Anne Maria Whitney, b. 25 Oct 1849, Waltham, MA;[5] "Anna Maria" d. 28 or 31 Mar 1852, Waltham, MA, aged 2 years 5 months, of fits.[6]
iv. Adaline Stearns Whitney, b. 17 Jan 1852, Waltham, MA;[7] a physician, 124 Dartmouth St., Boston, MA; d. 13 Feb 1896, Boston, MA, aged 44 years, of interstitial nephritis; physician, resided 42 Newbury Street, Poughkeepsie, NY.[8]
v. Charles A. Whitney, b. 15 Aug 1855, Waltham, MA;[9] m. Leila Porter.
vi. Thomas Lawrence Whitney, b. 31 Jul 1857, Waltham, MA;[10] drowned 26 Jun 1873, Waltham, MA, aged 15 years 10 months 26 days.[11]
