From: <ALLAGREEN -at- aol.com> Subject: Re: Whitney-Riehl Date: Mon, 10 Mar 1997 23:48:43 -0500 (EST) Dear Jerry: In the Melville, it suggests that there was a branch of the Hereford Whitneys who went to Ireland way back. On pp 44-45 a John de Whittenye who "goes frequently into Ireland" was mentioned with dates attached as 1252 and 1272, and Melville goes on to mention a family of Whitneys "of high standing" in Queens County, Ireland, of which this John might be the founder. Now this is all somewhat vague, but I have also seen isolated references to Irish Whitneys over the years, but not paid much attention to them, as they were not from what is considered the "main line". It would seem possible that this family whose history you cite and whose removal to North America is also mentioned may well be descendants of this earlier Whitney family shown above. Lots of room here for someone to step in as a researcher - and we might just find a source for one or more of our "unconnected" Whitneys. Thanks for the information, which I'll print out and stash in a separate folder for Irish ancestors of the Whitney family here in this country. Allan E. Green <allagreen -at- aol.com>
