From: Barry GeneDoctor Whitney <barryw -at- therock.mcg.edu> Subject: Free Genealogy Searches on the web Date: Tue, 25 Mar 1997 19:11:18 -0500 (EST) An interesting genealogy web site is <http://www.ancestry.com> There you can search for free a Social Security Death Index that contains 51 million names (8158 Whitney). Also free, you can also search a listing of 75,000 marriage records prior to 1800, and several other databases. The <http://www.familytreemaker.com/> site provides a free search of the Family Index files that similar to the ones on the CD version of the Family Tree Maker for Windows. But that basically just tells you which other database you need to buy from them to look up actual records. Is there a way to search online the early 1800's census records that are on the CD's that Family Tree Maker sells? If not, are there folks on this list who have one or more of the CD's they would be willing to search for others? Maybe we could pool our resources and not each have to buy a whole set? Are the FTW CD's Social Security and Marriage databases the same ones you can search free at the ancestry web site? Yours, Barry John Barry Whitney III North Augusta, SC barryw -at- therock.mcg.edu
