From: ALLAGREEN <ALLAGREEN -at- aol.com> Subject: Re: Illinois Date: Wed, 31 Dec 1997 23:31:16 EST Dear Ray: How nice to hear from you. Happy New Year! In answer to your question, here are a couple of addresses: Iroquois County Genealogical Society, Old Courthouse Museum, 103 West Cherry St., Watseka, IL 60970 Kankakee Valley Genealogical Society, 304 S. Indiana Ave., Kankakee, IL 60901 I think you might be on to something here. The idea expressed in your letter to me makes a lot of sense. I might offer a couple of suggestions, though. As one who is on the GenWeb system on the Internet as a "look-up contact" for a local (Bell County, KY) Historical Society, I would also suggest that you express a willingness to either join the local society or to send a donation to the society in return for their efforts on your behalf. Sometimes local societies have members who are willing to undertake research for a fee, but if you get into that, be certain that you have the terms of your agreement clearly understood before unleashing them to go to work. Also, when you formulate your query, be sure to clearly distinguish between facts that you "know" and your guesses or assumptions. If you have an idea of what kind of record source might be the most likely to provide the answers, don't hesitate to suggest it. This assumes, of course, that that kind of record actually does exist in that locality and has not been lost or burned. Remember, they know their local records better than you can. I still hope someone in the WRG in Illinois will respond to that question about records being restricted to licensed investigators, apropos my posting/query of December 8th. Happy Hunting and Happy New Year to all. Allan
