From: Margie and George Parker <MandG -at- math.siu.edu> Subject: [WHITNEY-L] wobbler virus is a HOAX Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 05:25:27 -0500 Please check your facts about a reputed virus before propogating a warning. The WOBBLER virus is a hoax. A quick internet search (I found the following with EXCITE just searching for WOBBLER) can get you reputable information. See for example: http://www.sophos.co.uk/virusinfo/scares/ Do your own searches and find a place where you can regularly check. If you use a commercial virus checker (and you do, don't you?) the company that desingned it probably keeps a web page where you can check for latest information. The only damage done by WOBBLER is the clogging of e-mail and list serves as people send the warning to countless acquaintences. If you get a warning such as the one sent out about WOBBLER, look for tell-tale phrases, such as 'IBM announced today', or "Microsoft announced today', or 'AOL announced today', or 'CNN reported today' that do not contain any indication of what day is being specified. Don't believe the message just because a well known company's name has been used in the message. Look for true references that you can double check and verify. Thanks George Parker
