From: janwhit -at- ma.ultranet.com (Jan Whitaker) Subject: [WHITNEY-L] John Curit Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 08:43:35 -0500 Carolyn, More on John Curit... A John Curate resided in Cape Elizabeth and was lost on the "Cumberland" in the Rev War, his widow Martha then petitioned for pay due her late husband when she was residing in Portland. Further listed is John Curate from Massachusetts serving in Capt Watkin's Company. These notations are listed on page 176, "Soldier, Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War-Maine"compiled by Fisher & Fisher. Next, that marriage I spoke of on Chebeague Island, is listed as John CURATE of North Yarmouth to Jane Hamilton of North Yarmouth 14 June, 1802 in "Vital Records of North Yarmouth, Maine to the year 1850" second Edition Edited by Ruth Wilder Sherman. [Chebeague was a part of the original territory of North Yarmouth] So there was a spelling change...I know that the name was known on Chebeague Island as CURIT. A John Curit owned land in the present town of Yarmouth, "a few hundred feet from where the North Road turns from East Main Street, near the former residence of John Curit". This passage found in "Ancient North Yarmouth and Yarmouth, Maine 1636-1936 A History" by William Hutchinson Rowe, page102. This passage is a description of the capture of three boys by Native Americans in 1742. Good Luck, Jan
