First of all, it may possibly be spelled "Whitnie" as that was the spelling on E. William (Bill)'s marriage certificate to Jennie Raines. Also there has been a lot of family lore that suggests either Bill or Jennie was a Cherokee Indian. I haven't been able to prove either of them one way or the other yet. Their eldest child told his descendents that it was Bill and that he was 'kicked out of the tribe for marrying a white woman.' My family had always heard it was Jennie who was the Cherokee. As the years have gone on, I believe it might be the Whitney/Whitnie side since Jennie was listed as a devout Methodist on the boys' applications to an orphanage after both parents passed away. I am wondering about why Bill would have been kicked out for marrying Jennie though. I have had many Indian researchers tell me this would not have happened. On the boys' applications, it says that Bill was of questionable morals and died from too much alcohol which would seem a more likely reason to be bannished. I included a couple of generations below. I did not include any of the newer generations since many of these people are still alive and may not want this information public.
