From: "Laurie Skillern" <whiski -at-> Subject: Re: [WHITNEY-L] AFRICAN AMERICAN WHITNEY FAMILY Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2002 10:44:40 -0600 References: <> I'm not actively researching African-American Whitney's but in my ongoing search for William Whitney I found a reference last year in the 1790 Mass. census to a Case Whitney. When I requested help identifying Case Whitney, Mr. Ward replied as follows: "_Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War_ gives: "Volume 17, page 157: Whiteney, "Case." Descriptive list of men raised in Worcester Co. to serve in the Continental Army, agreeable to resolve of Dec. 2, 1780, as returned by Seth Washburn, Superintendent for said county, June 12 [?], 1781; Capt. Kendall's co., Col. Whitney's regt.; age, 37 yrs.; stature, 5 ft. 5 in.; complexion, black; occupation, farmer; engaged for town of Lancaster; engaged March 5, 1781; term, 3 years." Since his complexion is listed as black, he seems to have been a free negro." Hope this helps in some way.
