From: "Kenneth Whitney" <klw1 -at-> Subject: Re: [WHITNEY-L] John A. Whitney Date: Tue, 14 May 2002 19:55:52 -0400 References: <> Hello Lois, I seem to have stirred up a hornet's nest, and I must admit that I know nothing of this family. I was just doing a favor for a list member. The testimony of this John A. Whitney was that his brother Mendel (sp.?) died at the Andersonville Prison during the Civil War. I believe that I intimated to Becky that this fact might be used as a determining factor in deciding if this John is related to your Mentel Whitney. My suggestion is that you might check on line for sites that have lists of prisoners who died at Andersonville. John states in his testimony that he lost contact with his parents after his move to Michigan. Perhaps his brother did not die after all at Andersonville, and he didn't know it because of the lost contact. Mitigating against this is that John didn't move until 1872. On the other hand, maybe Mentel (Mendel ?) also lost contact with the family. In the end, you may have to wait until I can once again visit the Archives, or you could pay the freight for th! e Archives to copy the file for you. If you decide to go that route, let me know and I'll give you the information you need to have the correct file copied.
