From: Whitney Keen <wkeen -at- inksite.com> Subject: Rare blood type and DNA Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2004 18:03:36 -0400 The YDNA surname project only analyzes the Y chromosome and can only show inheritance from father to son to son. There are a lot of other attributes in blood and other body fluids that are not shown in the Y chromosome but might show descent from a parent to child. The Y chromosome is never inherited by a daughter, so Y DNA analysis would be useless in determining inheritance that passes from a father to a daughter. However, a rare blood type could be inherited so it might show paternity or familial connection. The Y test we do for the project would not, and in any case it does not use blood, but saliva.
