From: Rose Zella Proctor <rzellaproc31 -at- vcn.com> Subject: Re: [WHITNEY-L] Oaths of allegiance in 1600's Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2006 19:47:15 -0700 References: <[email protected]> <[email protected]> In-Reply-To: <[email protected]> SOMEWHERE in the mounds of stuff I have found while researching my Mother's family the Whitneys there is something about John coming to the new World to prosper and make money as a tailor, his profession. In order to do this he signed a oath of allegiance to the King and the Church of England. For various reasons I have not worked much on this for some time and don't know where to start but I could give a clue for someone else to work on. I think it might be in the information we have found where he sailed to the New World, the ships documents etc. If memory serves me right the ship was the Elizabeth and Ann. Also I believe that Carolyn Whitney Branagan wrote something on this and it maybe could be found in the archives of November 2000. I was surprised at their reasons for coming as my paternal ancestors came for religious freedom and we pretty well have that in family history, so I thought everyone came for religious reasons. In researching my Mother's Whitney's though I found a lot of them still holding on in some manner to the Anglican Church. Maybe someone can take this tidbit and run with it and find out something interesting. Rose Zella On Mar 24, 2006, at 5:29 PM, W.G. 'Bill' Whitney wrote: >
