From: "Greg Nickels" <gjnickels -at- comcast.net> Subject: Henry Clay Whitney Date: Wed, 17 May 2006 21:20:34 -0700 References: <[email protected]> Here is what I have found: Henry Clay Whitney (1831 - 1905) came to Urbana, Illinois, in 1854 and practiced law with Abe Lincoln on the Eighth Judicial Circuit for the next seven years. Shortly after his inauguration Abe Lincoln appointed Whitney a paymaster of volunteers, a position he held until March 1865. After the war Whitney practiced law in Kansas and then moved to Chicago, where he was associated with Walter B. Scates, former justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. In 1892 he published a memoir, Life on the Circuit with Lincoln. (Paul M. Angle, "Introduction," in Henry Clay Whitney, Life on the Circuit with Lincoln [1892; rpt., Caldwell, Idaho, 1940]; Francis B. Heitman, Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army [Washington, D.C., 1903]) Greg Nickels ----- Original Message ----- From: Tim Doyle To: 'Greg Nickels' ; WHITNEY-L -at- rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2006 8:27 AM Subject: RE: [WHITNEY-L] Henry Whitney Greg: Whose friend was Henry Whitney? Was he a friend of Lincoln, or of the author? Do you have an estimated timeframe of when this Henry Whitney lives in Springfield? I searched in 1860 and found just one Henry Whitney, but he was just 5 years old at that time. Perhaps with a little more context we might be able to identify him. It's all about President Lincoln's cabinet and has a number of quotes from his "close friend", Henry Whitney of Springfield, Illinois. Has anyone run across this fellow before?
