Subject: More Descendants Found!

This might be of interest to those researching MAINE Whitneys!

One of our newest members, Mike Lewis (72446.3255@compuserve) submitted his GEDCOM file showing descendants of NATHAN WHITNEY and his 2nd wife, ELIZABETH MELCHER, which we do not have. I have added this to my working database.

The line goes: Nathan-->Nathaniel & Sarah Ford-->Benjamin & Jane Poor-->John & Elinor

Mike's GEDCOM file also contains quite alot of information on the ANCESTORS OF JOHN AND ELINOR, which I have not added to our working database as yet.

According to Mike's information: Nathan Whitney & Elizabeth Melcher had 3 children: ANN WHITNEY (twin) b. 5 Sep 1749 York, York Co., Maine married Ebenezer Watson on 22 Sep 1771 EBENEZER WHITNEY (twin) b. 5 Sep 1749 York, York Co., Maine ASA WHITNEY (we had this one) b. 17 Dec 1754 York, York Co., Maine married Patience Weston on 15 Apr 1775

Contact Mike Lewis directly for information on his sources.

Here is a quick Descendancy Chart for ANN WHITNEY & EBENEZER WATSON. A GEDCOM is available (either from me or Mike) -- just ask! Enjoy! :-) Jeanne

Re: I'm FINALLY Connected!!

Hello all -- I've FINALLY done it! I am definitely connected to ELI WHITNEY -- tho' not the way I had hoped. Actually our line comes down from Nathaniel Woods who married Alice Whitney. So as Whitneys, we've gone full circle.

I am the 9th great granddaughter of John Whitney & Elinor...5th cousin, 5 generations removed from the inventor Eli Whitney!! Of course, if anyone finds any corrections and/or additions to this info, ~please~ let me know. :-) Jeanne (Whitney) Muse

I have two lines of descent from John and Elinor (-----) WHITNEY. One goes John-1, John-2, Nathaniel-3, Hannah-4 (mar. Nathaniel BILLING). The other goes John-1, Benjamin-2, Joshua-3, Gershom-4, Sarah-5 (mar. Jonathan FLAGG). I have quite a few genealogical records about the John and Elinor WHITNEY family before 1800 in New England in which I would be willing to do look-ups. I am also interested in verifying and expanding the said data. It was collected while trying to esatblish that second line, which I believe I have successfully done. In that sense, *my* search is over.

Regards,

Robert L. Ward

Re: "Unconnected" Whitneys

Question for all members: Would anybody be interested in a gedcom file containing all of the "unconnected" Whitneys that people are researching?

I have toyed with the idea of using all the "poll" sheets and putting everybody's main Whitney interests in it -- connected or not -- for quick reference. My notes sections could contain the person who is looking for them with their e-mail address for further follow-up, as well as any comments the person made to us about their ancestor when they responded to the poll.

Any interest everybody?

Hello again Robert! Mary Ann Lindsay sent me a copy of your recent message to her in which you said:

In that sense, *my* search is over.<<

We have your 1st line, but not your 2nd line -- parts of it, but not all. We have from John 1-->Benjamin-->Joshua & this is where ours stops. JOSHUA WHITNEY (b. 1687) married HANNAH ROCKWOOD. Is this the same line?

Would you be willing to share further info on this line -- names, dates, places, sources etc.?

Congratulations on finishing your search! There are so many of us who are not so lucky (including myself). Your 2nd line might give someone out there the boost they need to "connect" to John & Elinor.

I look forward to your reply.

Thanks!

Subject: The Whitney Villages of Hereford

Hello to all from Hereford:

We entered Hereford this noon, from Glouster through Ross-on-Wye - lovely drive. Since we were much too early to go to our B & B in Hereford, we decided to tour around some of the villages that were held by or associated with the Whitney's in the 14th and 15th centuries. We began by looking at Much Cowerne, with a beautiful old church, but could find nothing that mentioned the Whitneys, although our cousins, the LIngens were in evidence (another branch stemming from Turstin the Fleming and Agnes de Merleburge - the first John Lingen was a brother of Eustace de Wigmore - the ancestor who granted the "hide" of land at Pencomb to the Abbey of St. Peter in Gloucester, a gift "from my ancestor" that was confirmed around 1250 by Sir Robert de Whyttenye, the earliest known Whitney for whom we have direct linkage evidence. We went on to Ocle Pychard, with even less results, as the church was locked and there was little else in the "village". We meandered around to find Little Cowerne, where we decided to lunch, it being nearly 2 PM. We stopped in a country pub/restaurant called the Three Horseshoes.

When the hostess heard me tell about the early association of our family

with the place, she brought me a copy of a History of Little Cowerne, which showed an Eustace de Whitney as Lord of the Manor in 1316, although saying that he was much more associated with Pencombe than with Little Cowerne.

After our lunch (I had a venison stew with veggies and new potatoes, Ginny had the roast pork from the carvery), she told us how to find the house of the lady who had written the book, and we went to call. She was delighted to meet us and was fascinated by the idea that we had such a large group of people working together via electronic means to help each other with this family. She was also interested to find out that the Ancestral File and the IGI had to be taken with large doses of salt, treating them as signposts to further research rather than the gospel according to Salt Lake City. (Please don't take offense, Arv, I'm sure you have seen the dozen different entries in the IGI for the marriage of Thomas Whitney to Mary Bray, most of which are not properly documented, and only two or three of which even have the parish right, if at all.) She (Jean Hopkinson of Little Cowerne) gave us the address of Stephen Guest, in Pencombe, who is her opposite number for preparing a history of Pencombe.

We went to visit him and had a lovely two hour talk, interspersed with tea

and fruitcake from his wife, who was quite interested in our sagas of the Whitneys even if she was not actually a local historian like her husband. We found that much of what he had of the Whitneys was from the same sources that I have used - The Patent Rolls, Duncumbe's History of Hereford, the Melville (!!!), the heralds Visitation of Hereford in 1569(?), etc. We were able to confirm a few dates for each other, and I had a bit about several marriages that he did not have, but basically he suggested sources for me to follow up on. I will be going to the Hereford Public Record Office tomorrow, to see what I can find. The Public Library is closed on Monday's, darn it. Perhaps we can spend a few hours there on Tuesday before going on to Shrewsbury for work on other branches of our family and as a prime source for Ginny's family work.

I'll write again about any and all new discoveries as they turn up. In the meantime, Happy Hunting to All from your traveling Whitney - Allan

Subject: Hereford and Whitney

Hello again to all of the Whitney Research Group (Unofficial):

After telling you about the great day on Sunday, visiting all the small outlying villages (except, of course, Whitney), we settled into our B & B hotel in the heart of Hereford. We are in a beautiful, large bedroom with a small dressing room and an "en suite" bathroom in a early 18th C. Georgian townhouse. It has been very nicely remodeled, and even has central vacuum (but the pipes run up the outside wall!). Monday we spent all day at the County Record Office, because the Library was closed. We had been put on to a series of publications by a private local historical and natural history society, the Woolhope Society. It has a publication series that began back in the 1860's and runs to the present day. There are many articles in it about the Whitneys, the Whitney Church, the Bridge and Ferry, and other Whitney villages and manors like Wigmore, Pencombe, Little Cowarne, etc.

There is also a lot about the Baskervilles and the Cliffords. Ginny and I

worked over the whole series and copied many articles and pictures (which I have not had time to work through, of ourse). I also found the Charter Rolls from 1461 to around 1480 and copied many entries dealing with Whitneys and many other assoeiated families.

There was so much that we decided to stay here an extra day. We went back to the Record Office this morning to finish up the Woolhope series and I looked at the rest of the Charter Rolls and some of the early Pipe Rolls, back in King John's time (early 1200's). Got a few things we can eventually use, I think. Then we went to lunch and over to the Library, where Ginny copied material out of the Duncumb History of Herefordshire, and I worked on some other early editions from the Pipe Rolls, including the Beauchamp Cartulary - a collection of documents running from 1100 to 1258, a period within which any documents are hard to come by, and coincidentally, the period of the gap in the Whitney line between Eustace, son of Turstin the Fleming and Agnes de Merleberge, who becomes in essence the first Eustace de Whitteney, and the Sir Robert de Whytenye who confirmed sometime around 1250 the gift of Eustace and his mother Agnes to the Abbey of St. Peter at Gloucester. Tonight we drove out to Whitney, through the "English Sunshine" (for which read misty rain). We ate a lovely dinner at the Boat Inn in Whitney on Wye, overlooking the river and watching the Ducks and the Swans sporting about. Tomorrow we will return to the Library for a couple hours to finish up what we were doing, and then quickly visit the Cathedral and the new Library with the Chained Library and the Mappa Mundi, before heading off to Shrewsbury to find a room for the next two days. More work there in perhaps the finest Local History Library we have ever found in England.

More to come as it happens. I will get back to work on Henry's parents when I return to London. My best to all, and Happy Hunting - mine sure is!!!

  Allan

Yes, it is the same line.

Perhaps. I once wrote this research up for publication, submitted it, and was rejected. I still have hopes of publishing it in the future.

Yes, of course. Subject to my desires to publish, I would be willing to help others who think they may descend from John and Elinor establish their line using my data on the family before 1800. I also have collected quite a few unattached WHITNEY persons (not direct ancestors) on whom I would be interested in further information.

Welcome to the group! I'll post your search info to the group very soon, so watch your mailbox. Because our membership has grown so large, the address lines on each message are long. If you ever want to send a message to the whole group, you'll need to add everyone to your address book (which is a long process!).

You'll hear from me as I post news for everyone on new members, descendants found, any questions I have, etc. You will also hear from Jon Aston (Mrj79@msn.com) who is compiling the master database on the descendants of JOHN WHITNEY & ELINOR (ancestors of Eli Whitney, cotton gin inventor); and ALLAN GREEN (allagreen@aol.com) who is researching the European ancestors of John and Elinor; as well as JOAN HICKS (jhicks8311@aol.com) who has the main database on the Whitneys of Connecticut. Plus, of course, anyone who might have a connection to your line.

I have a Gedcom file of our main database of the John and Elinor descendants. If you'd like, I'll send it to you. You'll need to know how to unencode it, as I'll be sending it to a different server. Let me know.

ALSO, you mentioned that you have a few "unconnected" Whitneys. Send those to me in text format (include even guesses for dates & places & any info you have), as I am in the process of putting all of those in a separate database. I'll have it available for the membership soon.

I am looking forward to this part.

Yes, I would definitely like a copy of this. Please send it to the following address:

Do not send it to the address in the header of this message, please! There I can uudecode it and download it to my home computer, where I will install it using my genealogy database program, The Master Genealogist (TMG).

Hopefully the GEDCOM database will connect most of them for me. Once I can compare your database to my paper records, I will be able to see what I have that you don't, and vice versa.

This is going to be fun, and hopefully helpful to someone.

Hello everyone! Quite a bit to pass on to you all today. First, update your address books with the following.

Please add JOYCE (what's your last name Joyce?) to your address books. Her e-mail address is salterr@aol.com. She is looking for a Tennessee Whitney. Here's her message to me: >>Heard you might know something of the Whitney fam I'm researching?

Have a Dewey L. Whitney who married our Sarah B. Bowman born 1854 Tn.

Lived probably 1870 or 1880 Mason Co, Ill, sometime after, probably moved to Gage Co, Neb? If familiar, please email.

I am primarily a Bowman family researcher, just like to know about

Dewey L. Whitney and share data with descendants. Thanks. Joyce<<

Please add ROBERT L. WARD ( ) to our membership. Robert has 2 liens of descent from John and Elinor. One goes John-1, John-2, Nathaniel-3, Hannah-4 (mar. Nathaniel BILLING). The other goes John-1, Benjamin-2, Joshua-3, Gershom-4, Sarah-5 (mar. Jonathan FLAGG). He has "quite a few genealogical records" about the John & Elinor family before 1800 in New England & he has offered to do "look-ups". He's also interested in verifying & expanding his data. And he says >>I also have collected quite a few unattached WHITNEY persons (not direct ancestors) on whom I would be interested in further information.<<

I have sent Robert our database, and I have told him about my "unconnected" database. He is reviewing it & plans to send us any info that we lack & also let us know about his research needs.

Please add WILBALEE NORA (WHITNEY) CLARK to your membership lists. E-Mail address is: PATICAKE@aol.com. She is stumped on some OHIO Whitneys. Can anyone assist her? Here are copies of her 2 messages to me. Note that she uses a MAC -- but does not have a genealogy program, so cannot use Gedcoms. Any suggestions to her about what program to buy for her MAC?

>>OK Starting with me Wilbalee Nora Whitney(Clark) I was born 1942 Bakersfield, Father Charles Tillinghast Whitney born 6-30-1909 Rocky River Ohio married Wilba Lee Holland Sept 26, 1929 his father Hiram Tillinghast Whitney born 2-19-1879 Norwalk Ohio married Lillian Mae Stevenson 1900, His father Charles L. Alan Wright posted this message. Please remove his name & address temporarily from our list.

>>Please take my name off the Whitney mailing list as I will be out of the country until late August. I'll re-subscribe then.

I like your idea of unconnected Whitneys as my Canadian line never seems to draw any attention when I have placed queries in diff. places over the past five years! Regards, Alan [ wrighta@ecsuc.ctstateu.edu ]<<

Do NOT add this person to our list, but read the following "query" from Jim Kuethe (Jkuethe@aol.com) which was passed on to me from Karen Gruba. Contact

Jim if you have any leads for him in his research.

>>I am trying to trace the parentage of a Whitney Whitson (b. circa 1828) who lived & died on Long Island. I believe that he lived in the Hempstead/Huntinton area. My main interest is in the Whitson family. I believe that Whitney Whitson was likely from a Whitney/Whitson marriage. I would appreciate it very much if you, or your sources/contacts have any record of a marriage between any Whitneys and a Whitson. Thank you for considering this query. Jim Kuethe<<

Barbara Black (babseeb@aol.com) is having trouble converting Gedcoms into her MAC computer too. I use an IBM clone, so can't help with MacIntosh questions. Do we have any MAC experts in the group who can help us with conversions from IBM format to Mac?

Now for my More Descendants to John & Elinor's line: Found info in a gedcom file with the source "History of the Wheeler Family in America", 1914, Albert Gallatin Wheeler, Jr. p.29

DABORAH WHITNEY daug. of BENJAMIN WHITNEY and SARAH BARRETT, b. abt 1710 Marlborough, Massachusetts; married 17 Mar 1730 JOSEPH WHEELER, son of John Wheeler and Elizabeth Wells. (This was Joseph Wheeler's 2nd marriage. He married 1st Elizabeth Holloway on 16 Jan 1718)

Children of JOSEPH WHEELER and DABORAH WHITNEY: 1. Sarah Wheeler b 8 Aug 1731 2. Silas Wheeler b 23 Oct 1732 3. John Wheeler b 22 Feb 1734 4. Solomon Wheeler b 25 Feb 1736; d 26 Nov 1773 "was in Capt. J. Weeks' Company in the French and Indian War, 1757." 5. David Wheeler b 4 May 1738; d 29 Dec 1739 6. Joseph Wheeler b 14 Jun 1740 "was in Capt. J. Weeks' Company in the French and Indian War, 1757." 7. Elizabeth Wheeler b 4 apr 1742 8. David Wheeler b 8 Dec 1744 9. Mariam Wheeler b 4 Dec 1746 10. Dinah Wheeler b 1 Jan 1749; d 2 Apr 1749 11. Dinah Wheeler b 1 Dec 1750 12. Fortunatus Wheeler b 29 Apr 1754 "served in the Revolutionary War."

We did not previously have DABORAH WHITNEY in our main database. Her line goes: Daborah-->Benjamin & Sarah Barrett-->Thomas & Elizabeth Lawrence-->Thomas & Mary Kedal(Kettle)-->John & Elinor.

Happy hunting everyone!

Hello everyone! My next 2 mailings will contain text files called MISCWHIT.TXT and WHITPLAC.TXT. Both are small, so won't take much disk space. You should be able to read & edit both of these files with your word processor, as they are in pure ASCII form. These are from my new database of "unconnected" Whitneys, which I am calling Miscellaneous Whitneys -- or MISCWHIT for short. Those of you who use PAF (Personal Ancestral File) will recognize the format of these files.

MISCWHIT.TXT is simply a listing, in alphabetical order, of all names in the database including birth & death dates & father or spouse's name.

WHITPLAC.TXT is a listing by place names of all events in the database, which I think will help all those of you looking in various states.

Gedcoms are available by request...so let me know if you want a Gedcom.

A few notes concerning my Miscellaneous Whitney database that you should remember: 1) DATES - most are approximate, and have been entered exactly as given to me. 2) No matches have been done. 3) No confirmations of any kind have been performed. 4) NOTES - I have included in the notes the submitter's name & e-mail address plus any other information given to me about the person/family. (You'll need the GEDCOM file to view the notes.) 5) The database is strictly for reference & should not be used as fact. It is hoped that it will help some of you connected together for further cooperative effort. 6) I will not connect people together from my database. (Lack of time prohibits this, I'm afraid.) If you wish to know who submitted the information, I suggest you request the GEDCOM file. 7) Updates will be done every couple of months, as required.

Enjoy! :-) Jeanne (Whitney) Muse

Jeanne,

It turns out that the flat ASCII file came through OK, all 630K of it. I downloaded it to my home computer, then did a GEDCOM import. There were a few dozen invalid lines, but most of the 34000 lines came in just fine. I am now adjusting all the place names to conform to my standard.

Thank you very much!

I feel compelled to inform you that an article of last year in The American Genealogist pretty well kills the connection between Thomas WHITNEY (who married Mary BRAY) and Robert WHITNEY (who married Elizabeth ap Morgan GUILLIMS), his alleged father. The latter did have a son Thomas, but he was too young to be identified with our Thomas. I can supply the exact reference if you are interested. The true parents of Thomas are yet to be discovered. Melville's book is based on this now-disproved tenet, and so all the earlier generations from Robert WHITNEY back will have to be expunged. I cannot comment on the BRAY and HASLONDE families, but see below.

By the way, I notice that some of the data is taken directly from the LDS Ancestral File. This is very dangerous, as that source is full of errors, even silly errors. Such data should be treated as *clue material only* until verified in *primary* sources.

Robert

Yes...we are all aware of the above. But, in many cases, data from the ancestral file is better than no data at all. This database is a working database & confirmations are still being performed on all of the data.
