K. Trouvat provided some of Jabez's descendants. I notice one error:

Philander Castle's first wife was Abigail Harper, born 1804, married in Meigs County, Ohio 18 March 1824. I do not have a death date for Abigail, but Philander married a second time in Meigs County to Lydia Whitney 10 March 1827. The original message showed Abigail as the second spouse of Rankin W. Castle.

In addition, the children of Thankful Whitney and John M. Cartwright were:

i. William (ca 1828), sp. Martha Ann Russell ii. Mary (1832-1886), sp. Jeremiah Poston (1819-1876) iii. Lucy (ca 1834), sp. Lithicum iv. Francis (ca 1837), sp. Mary Long v. Emeline (ca 1840), sp. prob. Abraham Taylor vi. Elsey Ann (ca 1842-1923), sp. William Nelson Carey

Dear friends and relatives,

I have updated my web page all the lineages of subscribers to the mailing list [email protected] which I could find in my e-mail. See the following URL:

 http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/lineages.html

I hereby solicit additions and corrections. I also would like to get the actual name of [email protected], which I don't have. New lineages would likely best be posted to the mailing list, but send corrections to me personally.

This is a follow-up to an earlier discussion of "Databases".

Regards,

Robert

Greetings fellow Whitney researchers.

I have just found some wonderful information on my gggg great

grandfather Xavier Abbott. He was born in or near Danbury, Conn, the son of Ezra Abbott a Rev. War soldier born in Ridgebury, Conn.

The connection to Whitney is that Xavier married Elizabeth Van Ness,

born in Milton Nov. 3, 1784 to John and Marth (Whitney) Van Ness.

This information was reprinted in an article of the Fenton Historical

Society in Chautauqua County New York. The Abbotts lived there, in Busti.

It starts by saying, " Quoting from the Whitney Family of Connecticutt

by S. Whitney Phoenix, 1873, Vol. I, page 324...". I would like to know if any of you are related to this Whitney family and if anyone has a copy of this book. My library cannot find one to interloan.

I would like to know who Martha Whitney Van Ness's parents are. If you

can help me out, please do. I would be more than glad to reciprocate any info from Martha to me. That is 5 or 6 generations.

Xavier and Elizabeth had a son named Whitney Abbott I really need to

find more info about him. He ended up moving to Battle Creek Michigan and left a 15 year old daughter there to marry Rolyn Shepard. However, Since the daughter Rozella lived with her grandparent's in the 1855 census, I have no proof of Whitney being her real father. This is my main focus. I feel that some Whitney researcher has the story somewhere.

Thank you so much for your patience, Carol Marston

Carol Marston posted the appended message regarding *The Whitney Family of Connecticut*. I found a copy of this work advertised on Bibliofind, as follows:

Phoenix,S Whitney: The Whitney Family of Connecticut ; 3 Volumes NY 1878
Privately Printed 3/4 Leather Teg 9x12 Quarto Limited 500c 2000+p total
Very Good+ Set US$450.00 Dick Brani.

Contact information for Dick Brani is as follows:

  Dick Brani, P O Box 1764, , Culpeper, VA 22701 Tel: 540 825 7413
  Email Address: [email protected]

I've bought books from Brani by email, and he seems to be a friendly sort. I recommended that Carol call him and ask him to photocopy the relevant pages. Unless someone from the group would like to buy it for her for Mother's Day...

Dear WRG:

With reference to Stephen (sp?) Whitney Phoenix book on the CT Whitney descendants of Henry Whitney, let's not forget that he got gulled by the fraudulent Mrs. De Salis before the printing of this book. He discovered the fraud later, and there have been numerous articles and other exposes written about her fraud. NOTHING prior to Henry is credible, and his birth attribution to Birkhamstead is also not supportable by any documentation - I looked for three days last summer, trying to find his ancestry at the Library of the British Society of Genealogists.

The last I remember, Joan Hicks was the keeper of the database for the CT Whitneys. Perhaps she can assist Ms. Marston in her inquiry beyond what I have included below.

All I can provide is the data from the last distribution of the descendants of Henry.

Martha Whitney Van Ness was the daughter of Jeremiah Whitney, b. 18 Sep 1731, in Ridgefield, CT(?), d. 28 Jul 1855 in Providence, NY; and Eva Youngs (no information)

Jeremiah Whitney was the son (9th child of 11) of Nathan Whitney, born ca 1695, Norwalk CT, d. after 1739, possibly in Ridgefield; and his wife Sarah _____, m. ca 1715.

Nathan Whitney was the son (also 9th child of 11) of John Whitney, b. ca 1642 either in England just prior to his father's departure for America, or soon thereafter, probably in Southold, Long Island. John Whitney d. in 1720 in Norwalk, CT; and his wife was an Elizabeth Smith, b. ca 1650, probably in CT, and died after 1741, again probably in Norwalk, CT. Their marriage took place 17 Mar 1674/5 in Norwalk, CT.

John Whitney was the son of the immigrant ancestor of this line, Henry Whitney (who does NOT appear in the parish register of Berkhampstead St Marys, Hertfordshire, England), b. ca 1620 and his unknown first wife.

This data is taken (I understand but do not know personally) from the Phoenix book, but one or more of the WRG who are from this line should confirm that for you. If you (Carol Marston) need further information about the De Salis fraud, please contact me directly, as it does not need to be aired again on the whole list.

Happy Hunting! Hope AOL and Compuserve both get straightened out so ALL our members get ALL of the postings ALL of the time.

Subject: Re: Maiser Problems and List Functioning

Michael, Jon, Barry, Robert, Peg, Jeanne, Jan, Jerry and all my other old friends:

Maiser was virtually swamped/destroyed by mass mailings from a spammer or spammers that overloaded the system. I got a message on another list, forwarded by the listowner, before the system went down completely, that said that Larry Stephens was shutting it down and didn't know when it would be back up, if ever. I have copied the message below. Since Larry provides the service as a private contribution to the genealogical community, and the University allows him to run it through their interface, the University bears no responsibility to provide the means to protect his system from the spammers other than whatever way they may find to protect all the users of <...indiana.edu>.

If Larry is not able to find a way to protect the Maiser system from spammers, then we may have lost this invaluable service, and have to reconstitute our lists and go back to the way we used to work, with each member trying to keep up with a maillist in his/her own address book, or maybe one of us could manage to operate as a remailer for a short time until it reappears

So, until that service is reinstituted, we cannot send anything out to the whole list, and must address all our WRG communications to known addresses, as I have done above. Here is the copy of the message I received from the listowner of the SWITZERLAND list.

<copied and inserted To all my list subscribers of Switzerland list

Please read below. If you think you have solution, please send it to me so I can forward it to Larry Stephens at his private address. Until then please do NOT attempt to post any message to the Maiser-based lists. Some of you will get repeated message because some of you are on several of my lists. I tried to send a single message to everybody on my lists before the Maiser shut down but apparently didn't make so I am sending to you directly based on review list I have as of April 2, 1997. If you have any subscriber review list that is dated later than April 2, I would appreciate having it so that the missed subscribers get the message. Until you receive message that Maiser is back up running after the spammer is busted and stopped, please do not attempt to post to any Maiser list.

W. David Samuelsen, Listowner

1st message VERY BAD NEWS FOLKS.

BECAUSE OF A SPAMMER RUNNING REPEATED SPAMS THROUGH HERE I AM FORCED TO SHUT OFF THE MERCURY MAIL SERVER. I DON'T KNOW RIGHT NOW IF THIS IS TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT.

IF I CAN I'LL UPDATE YOU. PLEASE HOLD ON FOR A FEW DAYS WHILE I LOOK AT OTHER OPTIONS.

2nd message I couldn't tell if this went out or not and I didn't want to leave you all hanging.

The SPAM that has been sent through here has had devastating consequences. I've had to shut off all incoming mail. This may pe PERMANENT!

I'm trying to catch my breath on this before looking at other options. If anyone has suggestions, I'm glad to listen. It may well mean moving everything from here. Even if I can keep regional lists going, I don't think it will be possible to keep individually owned lists on other IU machines.

I'm truly sorry. This place in Georgia has run thousands of spammed messages through here and created enormous problems for us, and that's what has caused this.

My mail has been coming to one of my Mercury servers and they are both shut off. I'm getting it rerouted but that won't take effect for at least a day.

If I can't find a reasonable solution then your only choice will be to move your lists to other places. If it comes to this, I will send you your subscription lists and archived files as fast as I can, but it may take a little time. For now, as I've said, I'm looking at options.

WRG: Hope this helps you understand what the problem is. At the moment I have no solutions, but lets "we hardy few" who are a lot (but not all) of the core of the WRG try to keep something like communication going by the old method until we get a resolution from Larry and Michael (our own listowner).

Allan

Subject: Whitney Maillist (i.e., the WRG)

Dear WRG:

This is a copy of a message that I sent to about a dozen people yesterday, and I have since been sent an April 7th listing of the subscribers to the Whitney maillist from one of those folks. Michael Whitney (our listowner) has not yet gotten back to me (he has to do mundane things like working, while my school year is over and I have available time to deal with this stuff), so I made up "lists of addresses" for my AOL address book to send this message to everyone I can reach. If Michael approves, I am volunteering to "remail" any items that any listmember will send me to the rest of the list, at least for a short while (see comments below). I think what we are doing together is so important that I would never want to see it die.

Here, then, is yesterdays message for everyone (the dozen for whom it is a duplication will, I hope, forgive me)

LET ME TRY AGAIN. I've gotten out of the habit of doing this stuff, but the teacher in me say do it over until you get it right, dummy.

Subject: Maillist news

Dear WRG:

I got this from the listowner of the Switzerland list (which has moved to rootsweb). I still think we should wait a bit and see what happens with Maiser. Anyone who wants to send a message to all on the Whitney list, send it to me temporarily, with *For the Whitney List* as a Subject heading, and I will forward it to everyone. Here is the further information that I just received - to let you know what is going on.

This is a news article from the Atlanta Journal Consitution newspaper May 13, 1997.

E-MAIL MISHAP HALTS GENEALOGY SERVICE, Researchers, buffs lose a valuable tool

By Art Kramar STAFF WRITER

A Dunwoody retailer said he unwittingly started a chain of junk Email that undermined one of the most popular exchanges of genealogy information on the Internet. The shutdown is depriving tens of thousands of genealogy buffs of their most effective online research tool, said John Rigdon, national coordinator of The USGenWeb Project, a genealogy clearinghouse on the World Wide Web.

The exchange, called Maiser, is a collection of mailing lists for those trading research about their ancestors. Many genealogy buffs subscribe to several lists, keyed to cities, towns, regions or family surnames. It's not unusual for a genealogy hobbyist to sift through several hundred list-sent messages daily, in search of a clue that points to a distant ancestor.

Maiser, the largest collection of detailed lists with 40,000 subscribers,

was forced off the Net last week after being used as a fake return address to hide the identity of a junk e-mailer.

The disaster began when Sam Khuri, general manager of Benchmark Print Supply, sent a $100 money order to the post office box of a company that promised to advertise his service to 50,000 potential customers. "If I knew what they were going to do, I never would have sent the money," said Khuri, whose company recycles toner cartridges for copiers.

The contractor, whose identity Khuri said he lost in a computer crash of his own, e-mailed thousands of ads touting Khuri's service last week. The junk e-mail was routed through Indiana University computers, making it appear the ads bad come from the same computers that are home to the genealogy lists.

The tactic of forging return addresses, making an uninvolved third party

appear to be the sender of junk e-mail, is a common one. Such practices prompted several online services, including CompuServe and Prodigy, to get federal courts to help them bar junk e-mailers from their services. Larry Stephens, an Indiana University official who organized the groups as a hobby over the past three years, was forced to shut them down Friday rather than let them appear to be the source of the junk e-mail. Stephens said he couldn't risk furthering the perception that the junk e-mail was somehow connected to the university.

"The loss of these mailing lists is devastating," Rigdon said. "We've lost approximately one third of our backbone for genealogy research. About 20,000 daily users of the Internet have been effectively left with no communication."

Stephens may reopen some of the regional lists this week if he can find software that can't be commandeered by junk e-mailers, but with the added security burden, he said it's unlikely he will revive the surname lists.

Robert Turner, 52, a postal clerk in Huntsville, Ala., and a descendant of traveling blacksmith David Turner, bemoaned the demise of the surname lists.

Turner and his wife, Winona Turner, added 4,000 ancestors to their family

tree in the 30 years before they computerized their search, but 20,000 more in just 16 months online. Without the surname lists, said Turner, looking for his ancestors "will be akin to driving down a dark country road with no head-lights."

And you might want to help financially or physicially (if you live in Georgia) John C. Rigdon in his legal case against the junk emailer guy under Georgia law.

John C. Rigdon ([email protected]) is the chief person to contact. Ask him what you can do to help.

>END ARTICLE

Now you know a little more. Let's keep in touch (to quote Jon Aston).

Hello Allan,

Thank you for the information on the Junk E-mail. I was perplexed when all the material that didn't pertain to Whitney was coming to me.

I will be willing to help financially with a new "List" I have found this Whitney data to be so helpful to my family and still need questions concerning Elinor answered as well as a definitive result of the linkage to Sir Robert. I am happy to have all the linkage to John and Elinor, which I have obtained through WRG.

Keep in touch. Perhaps we all need more principled persons and more with a sense of responsibility to all mankind. There are always those who take delight in making life miserable for others.

Dear WRG,

First, my respects to you who are making it possible for the group to keep going during these difficult days...

As a 'library deprived' person my research possibilities are pretty limited, but I've been able to come up with a few things that may be of interest.

For those of us whos lines currently end with Jabez Whitney b.1780 (a) m. Abigail Milk Wheeler, On the GENDEX pages I found another Jabez -

Subject: Re: Lists of Whitney VR's available

Dear WRG:

A question that came to me today leads me to realize that the last message I sent out to the WRG about the available list of VR lists came out at a time that Maiser was just beginning to have problems. Indeed, today I got more than a dozen messages from Northeast-Roots, a Maiser list, that were originally mailed on March 31, April 1st & 2nd. They had been floating around on Larry Stephens' hard disk, I guess. So, I decided to repeat below the message that I sent out on March 31, with the contents of the eleven collections of Whitney Vital Record extracts that are available from me as an ASCII file. Even though it says MA VR's, notice that the last list includes Gorham, ME and Keene, NH.

Keep hunting! Allan E. Green <[email protected]>

Dear WRG: [message of March 31, reprinted]

I think (!) that I have finally caught up with all the VR's that were sent to the list and to me by Peg Sanborn & Jan Whitaker and a host of other volunteers including Jon Aston, Karen Grubaugh, Marion Leska, Jeannie Muse, Brenda and Paul Nichols, Bert Smith, Carolyn Vosburg, Robert Ward, Vickie White and Jerry Whitney, and if I somehow missed somebody, I am terribly sorry and apologize profusely.

For some of the newer list members, this is a project that began quite some time ago, and is available in several forms - on Robert Ward's WebSite at

http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/

and from me in the eleven lists of towns shown below, as an ASCII file that is quite easy to load into a word processor and print out for quick reference. For many of those who have been collecting along the way, I have deleted a few instances of duplication, especially Concord and Groton which were first published in an incomplete form and later corrected (the earlier ones are no longer in the lists), and I have also combined the Stow and Templeton/Harvard lists, which had been offered separately, with some others to cut down on the number of "collected lists" all told.

Here, then, is what I hope is the last of the offerings of collected Whitney VR's

As always, those who would like copies of any of the above eleven ASCII files sent to them as attachments, please write me a note directly, indicating which of these you would like sent to you.

I am still bouncing around ideas about an overall index to all the Whitney data that has been appearing - starting with these records and including all the different kinds of data that has been showing up through the generosity of the group, taken from town records, obituaries, cemeteries, newspapers, family genealogies like the Pierce, etc. and family tree submissions. The problem is to figure out a way to build a relational database that will not only allow but also encourage the creation of links among the various entries.

I will be seeking assistance from the computer science department at my school, and will try to keep you posted about developments.

This is something that I just cannot see being done by any of the current genealogy packages, but I can't lay claim to much experience with a lot of them. I do have some idea of structure and structural analysis from my profession as a Music Theorist, and will be trying to apply that type of analysis to the problem of creating such a database. I know Peg has made a start with an index of these VR's, and I would hope to incorporate that with anything that I try to do. More on all this as it develops.

Subject: Forward for Whitney List

Dear WRG:

This is a forward for Jerry Harrison ([email protected]). Hope someone can help him.

Allan - Could you forward a message on to the WHITNEY list? I lost my address book containing the addresses in some computer glitch (most likely of my own making!)

Anyway, Gratia Francis WHITNEY, of Fitchburg, Worcester, MA, m. 12/31/1848 Edward Cutter LOCKE of Lancaster, Worcester, MA. This is basically all of the information I have about them. I'm interested in vital dates and whether they had children. I have done a fair amount of research on Lancaster and suspect that they may have moved elsewhere.

Folks,

Just in from Mike Spathaky who is Secretary of the (UK) Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) - an index of Cheshire Wills 1492-1857. I have extracted the WHITNEY entries for those consummate Henry hunters et al. There were no entries under obvious name variants (WITN..., WYT..., WHYTN...).

Not much info, I'm afraid - just enough to whet the appetite. Someone needs to go to Cheshire R/O to look through the microfilm copies of these Wills to extract details. I would love to volunteer but it's 150 miles from Oxford and I don't have the time just now.

If anyone sees a name or names that hold particular interest, I may be able to get the R/O do the lookup, or I could order a copy through the mail.

Other details below for those interested in other names.

Regards

John Whitney

From: Mike Spathaky <[email protected]> To: "All," <[email protected]> Subject: Cheshire Will Index on the Web

All,

I received this e-mail fronm the genuki maintainers mailing list and thought it might be of interest. There are several county surnames interest lists on the various genuki county pages.

Date: Sun, 18 May 1997 13:57:05 +0100 From: Brett Langston <[email protected]> Subject: Cheshire Will Index on the Web

Hello All,

For the last five years, the Cheshire Record Office has been compiling a computerised database of its Cheshire wills. Work has just been completed, and the index covers over 70,000 records of probate from the period 1492-1857, showing the name, abode and occupation of the testator, and the type of documents concerned (i.e., wills, inventories, admons, or other).

In collaboration with the Family History Society of Cheshire, the CRO has now made this index available on the net. The main index page is at:

 http://sentinel.mcc.ac.uk/genuki/big/eng/CHS/wills/index.htm

The whole thing occupies 6.5 Mb, and 100 separate pages, and I'm extremely grateful to Phil Stringer for making the space available on Sentinel. I hope that having an average file size of 65 kB will deter people from attempting to download the whole thing, while at the same time not discouraging people from looking up their own specific interests.

The CRO maintains the copyright on the original data, although they are happy to make it freely available, and have no plans to sell their printed versions.

This project may be of interest to maintainers of other counties, who may be considering similar ventures at some point in the future.

Brett Langston The Family History Society of Cheshire http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/blangston/fhsc/

WILLS AT THE CHESHIRE RECORD OFFICE

This index includes all the wills 1492-1857 proved at the Chester diocesan consistory court and now held at the Record Office. It brings together the supra wills (for estates of 40 pounds and over), the infra wills (less than 40 pounds), the disputed wills and the registered wills, most of which were previously listed separately. These wills cover roughly the old county of Cheshire as it existed prior to 1974.

The index supplies name, abode and occupaton. It also indicates the type of record which survives for the testator.

Type of record:

   1 = will
2 = 'admon' or administration bond (normally where there is no will)
3 = inventory of personal property
4 = codocil or other probate documents

Most wills are supra (WS). Where they are not, eg. infra (WI), contested (WC) or registered (EDA 2), this will be entitled in the column headed 'notes'. Other relevant details will be noted here also.

These pages have been prepared by the Cheshire Record Office in collaboration with The Family History Society of Cheshire.

Jeanne's response to Karen - and we need help here - MA residents, please note! It looks like we will be going elsewhere, but there seems to be a home soon to be forthcoming, as soon as the Rootsweb people get their new server up and running and the procedure for taking over Larry's lists worked out. Will keep you posted. For those suffering withdrawal pangs, Northeast-Roots has been reconstituted as Northeast-Roots-L, but still at Larry's shop, under a new listserver. If you are interested, drop me a note and I will post directions on how to subscribe (for those of you who were not on the list previously - those who were clearly know how to do it already) AEG

>>Might I ask you kindly to post the information on those Orange, MA births? Many thanks, Karen in France<<

Unfortunately, all that I have are handwritten notes from viewing a film at our local LDS library. Thus, they are not accurate and I dare not post then as "official". Does anyone have access to the ORANGE, MASSACHUSETTS VITALS RECORDS? I notice that this city was not among the "Extracted" ones that we have done so far.

Concerning our previous postings regarding the Orange, Massachusetts, vital records, Rob Roy wrote to me today:

"I have Fisks Cemetery listing for Orange, Mass. The Orange VR have never been published."

Pity! In case anyone needs Rob's address to ask him about the cemetery records, reach him via e-mail at [email protected]

Hi, Cousins, Have not had any mail for ages! Have not heard from the Whitneys or any one but my brother, son, and cousin Barb. I miss all the activity. What is happening with the group? By the way, do any of you know who this "Pratt and Whitney" is that the Lady Finch attributes her successful round the world flight? She just landed here at Oakland airport. Why don't you give me a write and let me know how things are! Miss you all, MAL

The following information regarding early American Whitneys (mostly 1770's and 1780's) in New England and the Carolinas (one OH listing) was found on a CD called Colonial America -- Pre-1790, Census Index, Tax Lists, etc., from CD#136 - Automated Archives, GRS, MicroQuix; SNDX W350

I thought some of you on this list might find helpful leads here. I think these are all the Whitney listings they have. Are there other names people would like me to look up?

Dear WRG:

This is to introduce Sandra Elrod, who has just joined us. As you can see from Jon's connection for her ancestor from the Pierce book, she has already a slew of ready made "cousins" in the line from John to Richard to Moses. I have written to Michael about the transfer of the WRG to another listserver and hope to hear from him soon about whatever I and other volunteers can do to facilitate the transfer. One by one the other lists are coming back, the regional lists through Larry at Indiana and the single surname lists on RootsWeb.
