Hello, my name is Hugh Whitney and I'm interested in finding out more about the descendants of Baxter Whitney (1812-1887) and his wife Mary Anne Kneeland (1814-1887). They lived in Waterbury, Vermont until 1866 when they moved west to Milford Kansas. Baxter was a flour miller by trade. Baxter and Mary Anne had 5 children; George Baxter Whitney (1837-1851), Arthur Barton Whitney (1846-1917), Katherine Amelia Whitney (1837/38-1907), Emeline B. Whitney (1844-?) and William Wallace Whitney (1840-1864). The 1860 US census identifies an Otis Whitney in this household, with the same age as Arthur Barton. Due to the premature death of Baxter's brother Solon Whitney, Solon's son Otis lived with his Uncle Baxter.
Baxter's parents were Deacon Chester Whitney (1783-1850) and Polly Waite Green (1784-1854).
George Baxter died young for reasons I am unaware of.
Katherine married Albe Burge Whiting in 1858, who was a successful businessman. They moved to Kansas as well. A lot is known about AB Whiting as he eventually moved to Topeka Kansas and supported the growing university there (Washburn College which became Washburn University). There is a Whiting Field House on the campus and a memorial gate for AB and Kate at a local cemetery as they supported its establishment. They had six children of which 4 survived to adulthood.
Emeline B. I know nothing about.
William Wallace enlisted in company D of the 1st Vermont Cavalry on August 18, 1862 during the US Civil War. He achieved the rank of sargeant and died in the army on December 29th, 1864. He was buried on January 1st, 1865 in the same cemetery as his brother George.
Arthur Barton married Emma Julia Patch of Vermont, and moved to Kansas with his father in 1866. Arthur worked mostly as a flour miller in Milford. Emma and Arthur had one child, Frank Arthur Whitney, born October 18, 1869. Emma died in 1879 after an extended illness, it was assumed to have been TB. Frank Arthur is my grandfather.
I am interested in further details on all of these people.
