:MRS. HENRY FARNAM DIMOCK (SUSAN CORNELIA WHITNEY), of Washington, D. C., elected a Pilgrim Tercentenary member 7 May 1919, was born 27 March 1845, the daughter of Brig. Gen. James Scollay and Laurinda (Collins) Whitney, and died at Bar Harbor, Maine, 11 September 1939, in her ninety-fifth year.

:She was descended from John1 Whitney, a resident of Isleworth-on-the-Thames, co. Middlesex, England, who sailed from London early in 1635 on the Elizabeth and Ann, and settled in Watertown, Mass., where he was admitted freeman 3 March 1636, served as selectman, town clerk, and constable, and died 1 June 1673, aged about 84 years, through Richard2 of Watertown and Stow, Mass., admitted a freeman 7 May 1651, who married Martha Coldam, Richard3, 1660-1723, of Stow, whose wife was Elizabeth Sawtell, Richard4, 1694-1775, of Stow, whose first wife was Hannah Whitcomb, Gen. Josiah5, 1731-1806, of Harvard, Mass., a soldier at Lake George, N. Y., in 1755, and officer in the Revolution, selectman, State representative, whose first wife was Sarah Farr, Josiah6, 1753-1827, of Harvard, and Nelson, N. :She was married 5 September 1867 to Henry Farnam Dimock, B.A. (Yale, 1863), M.A. (ibid., 1866), lawyer, railroad and bank official, vice president and treasurer of the Metropolitan Steamship Company, fellow of Yale College, 1899-1911, who was born at South Coventry, Conn., 28 March 1842, and died in New York City 10 April 1911, son of Dr. Timothy and Laura (Booth)(Farnam) Dimock.

:Mrs. Dimock was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Order of Colonial Lords of Manors in America, and the Colony Club of New York City.

:Interested in genealogy, Mrs. Dimock copied, prepared, and published in 1898 the "Births, Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths, from the records of the town and churches in Mansfield, Connecticut."

:After the death of her husband, Mrs. Dimock moved to Washington, D. C., where she was prominent in the social life of diplomatic circles and also of the city.

:JAMES MONTGOMERY NEWELL, A.B., LL.B. and A.M., of Boston, elected an annual member 2 May 1939, was born at Roxbury (Boston), Mass., 22 May 1867, the son of James Webster and Elizabeth Emma (Spilman) Newell, and died in Boston 1 December 1939.

:He was a descendant of Abraham1 Newell, who, with his wife and children emigrated in 1634 from Ipswich, co. Suffolk, England, on the Francis, and settled at Roxbury, where he was admitted a freeman 4 March 1635, and died 13 June 1672, aged 91 years, through Isaac2 of Roxbury, who married Elizabeth Curtis, daughter of William Curtis, and died 8 December 1707, Josiah3, 1680-1759, of Needham, Mass., selectman, town clerk, whose wife was Hannah Fletcher of Dedham, Mass., Josiah4, 1709-1792, of Needham, selectman, deacon, justice of the peace, who married Sarah Mackintire, Josiah5, 1742-1812, of Needham, selectman, a soldier in the Revolution, captain of cavalry in 1788, whose wife was Hannah Whitney, Josiah6, 1775-1859, of Dover, Iron manufacturer, grocer, dealer in dry and fancy goods, clerk of the First Parish Church, who married Metsey Mann, James Montgomery7, 1821-1866, of Boston, whose wife was Caroline Webster Swett, and James Webster8 of Roxbury (Boston), her father, merchant, who was born in Boston 13 February 1849, married in Boston, 14 October 1866, Elizabeth Emma Spilman (born at Chester, Ill., 25 September 1849, died at Gloucester, Mass., 16 September 1914, daughter of Benjamin F. and Mary (Potter) Spilman), and died at Brookline 5 March 1940.

:James Montgomery Newell was prepared for college at Roxbury Latin School, where he was graduated in 1885. Entering Harvard College, he completed his course and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1889. He then studied at the Harvard Law School, was an editor of the Harvard Law Review, and graduated in 1893 with the derees of Bachelor of Laws and Master of Arts.

:For a year he served as private secretary to Mr. Justice Gray of the Supreme Court of the United States. From 1894 to 1897 he practised law in Boston with Fish, Richardson & Storrow, later with Arthur Lord, and from 1897 to 1906 with Dunbar & Rackemann, being a member of the firm from 1902. From 1906 to 1936 he was a member of the firm of Cabot & Newell, but at the time of his death he was practicing alone. He was an expert conveyancer.

:Among his clubs were the Union Club, the Country Club, and the Harvard Club of Boston. He was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association.

:He married first, in Boston, 12 December 1895, Elizabeth Lothrop Rogers, who died in Boston 17 August 1898, daughter of Forham and Elizabeth (Lothrop) Rogers; and secondly, in Boston, 6 June 1901, Alice Norton Blake, born at Belmont, Mass., daughter of George Fordyce and Martha Jane (Skinner) Blake, who, with tow children, James Montgomery Newell, A. B. (Harvard, 1924), of Brookline, and Alice Blake Newell of Boston, survives him.
