He attended Oxford University where he matriculated from St. Mary Hall 19 Apr 1616, aged 18, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brasenose College 1 Feb 1614/15, a MA degree 4 Dec 1617, and a Bachelor of Divinity degree 5 Jul 1627.{{ref|5}}

In 1617 he was mentioned in his father's will.{{ref|6}}

He was supposedly rector of Mitchell Troy, Monmouthshire, Wales in 1625.{{ref|7}}

On 28 Nov 1626, John Scudamore, Esq., authorized James Whitney (and Edmond Leigh?) of Oxford University to deduct amounts from money paid to him quarterly by (his father?) Sir John Scudamore, Baronett, and to use these funds to pay back Robert Davenant and John Nurse for debts he owed them.{{ref|8}}

He was rector of Donhead St Andrew, Wiltshire from 1631 until sequestered in 1646 by the Westminster assembly of divines.{{ref|9}}

In 1636 he administered his brother Oliver's estate.{{ref|10}}

James Whitney wrote his will 12 Aug 1667, added a codicil 5 Sep 1668, probated 4 Jun (Jan?) 16__.{{ref|11}}

He resided Donhead, Wiltshire.{{ref|12}}
