-| '''Abner Nathaniel Whitney''', b. 17 Jul 1860, Charles City, IA; murdered 28 Apr 1894.  He resided there with his parents until the death of his father in 1884.  In 1886 he moved to Missouri Valley, IA, and followed his trade, that of carpenter, until 1890, when he moved to Washington Territory and resided for two years.  He then returned to Missouri Valley and in 1894 he was elected city marshal of that place.  Early in Apr 1894, many residences and stores were burglarized.  Marshal Whitney with other officers succeeded in locating the thieves, and on the 28th raided the house where they were stopping.  In arresting the men Marshal Whitney was shot throught the heart and instantly killed.  One of the thieves was captured and the other escaped, the former was subsequently lynched by the people for the murder.  Whitney was very popular and well liked by all.
