Whitney, William H., A Watertown Farm in Eight Generations: A Memorial of the Whitney Family (Cambridge, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society, and Watertown Historical Society, 1898)
Transcriber's Note: This book is a manuscript written in white letters on a dark blue background, like a blue-print.
[p. 71]
Abraham Whitney, Ancestors
My motive in preparing this family memorial shall be plainly set forth at this point.
I am in this chapter to marshal the descendants of Abraham Whitney of the fifth generation in descent from John Whitney and Elinor Whitney, Puritan Emigrants who settled at Watertown, Massachusetts Colony in 1635. His son John who came from London with him, aged eleven years, is of the second generation in this direct line. He had been attending the Merchant Tailors School at the English Metropolis for four years before the
[p. 72]
embarkation to New England. He was the oldest of five sons, and three more sons were born in Watertown. John, Richard and Thomas were admitted as freemen of Watertown, but Richard and Thomas moved to Stowe, Jonathan to Sherbourne and Joshua, after living at Groton came back to the old farm. Benjamin went to York Maine. Although the boys scattered as stated, they spent their early life, owned lands, or married or had children born in Watertown. It was about the time of their father's death in 1673 that they scattered. But John staid on the farm marrying in 1642, when he was twenty two years of age and commencing a home of his own the next year, 1643. Here he lived and died. A three acre lot bought of Edmund Howe was his home lot on Lexington St. east side and
[p. 73]
south of Bradshaw Whitney's brick and wood farm house now there. Here were the town lots designed for compact dwelling of the townsmen for mutual defense. From this spot he could look east down the valley between Whitney's hill on the south and Fowle's hill on the north along the course of Orchard Street, and see the smoke ascending above the tree tops of his fathers homestead in the meadow near the Cambridge Road. We may be sure that he often did this, calling to mind with pride his joint labors with his father and seven brothers in felling the forests and clearing the farm. His father died in 1673. One hundred and two years late his grandson, Capt. Daniel Whitney owned 142 acres of this land which his inventory describes as follows: "The Home lot, the orchard
[p. 74]
west of the house, Bonds lot, Fillipses and Ormes lot, Home Meddo, Sheepe Pasture Wood lot and Pasture, Spring and Side Hill Pasture, Stowells House lot, Stowells Meddo so called, Hill orchard and Side Hill Pasture, Spring land west of the barn, Spring House lot, Close north of the House lot, Spring Upper Orchard, and Hendersons lot." These farming divisions of the close of the 18th century were the result of the plans and labors of the 17th century and the eight boys worked for their father and these other farmers whose names are in this inventory record and whose titles formed the Whitney Farm title. Our imaginations must fill the intervals of this farm toil. There was fishing the river for food; There were pioneers calls to hunt the wilde for game; There was a County and Town bounty for wolves, foxes and
[p. 75]
blackbirds. There was the sterner duty to scour the woods for lurk-savage-foes, and to rally the women and children for defense in the Garrison House against the attack. Watertown was open and on the frontier. This farm between the Concord and Sudbury highways, in 1643 was at a point of great exposure; but later was doubtless a place of refuge for those farther out actually driven from their farms by the Indians. Then there was the march to the out-posts to repel the attack. Capt. Patrick of Watertown led the Watertown men to the Pequot War in 1637. Forty men went to Groton in 1676 and the same number under Capt. Hugh Mason, then a Selectman marched to the relief of Sudbury garrison houses invested by a band of a thousand Indians Apr. 21, 1676. John Whitney was called from his farm and impressed by Colony order to go upon this Sudbury expedition. The Archives of Massachusetts
[p. 76]
Volume 68-100 and Volume 67-100 indicate the services, and the ledger of Provincial Treasurer Hull gives, at page 876, the sums paid him for military service. He was selectman at the time, and after an interval of a year (1677) was selectman again. His son Samuel and his nephews Moses, Thomas and Jonathan served in the Narragansett wars. His son Benjamin served in the French war of 1690. He was with his brother Joshua Executor of his fathers will. His sons, John the oldest of ten children, and Benjamin the youngest were the administrators of his Estate probated in 1692, numbered 17596 on the file. He owned twenty three acres of the Farm, besides two hundred and ninety acres in other parts of the County. He left an informal will in which he tried to entail some of his real estate. The Heirs, by an agreement divided the estate by approval and decree of the judge chiefly as their father had provided, but broke the Entail.
[p. 77]
We learn by this will that the "profits of ye orchard" were a valuable part of the Estate and the yearly supply of hay from Beaver Brook (meadow) was needed at the farm.
Benjamin the youngest son received in the division "all the land that I bought of How or also as a small meddo [-----] after his mother's decease." He is of the third generation in this branch of the family. He was the owner of land adjoining having purchased six acres on Orchard Street of J. Ormes who married Elizabeth the granddaughter of Rev. George Phillips. Benjamin was born in 1660 and died after 1732 and perhaps in 1736. I have read all the deeds and probate records to or from every Benjamin Whitney in Middlesex Co. 1689-1743 & do not find his will or probate record. The will of Benj. Whitney proved in 1736, mentioned by Barry is not his will. The second marriage to Elizabeth which
[p. 78]
Barry gives us and Pierce follows him in giving to our Benjamin is wrong. That Benjamin is the son of Joseph another son of John. Our Benjamin the soldier who fought the French married Abigail Hagar Mar. 30th 1687 and had two daughters and four sons. All of the sons settled in Watertown or Waltham. John the Elder purchasing land on Main and Lexington Streets nearly adjoining his grandmother Ruth Benjamin the Soldier's home was on Orchard Street perhaps opposite Hovey Street in the house now owned by the Whiting Estate or another on the same site. His father owned the land which he purchased of Father Arnold 1661, and Benjamin conveyed it to his youngest son Capt. Daniel in 1725. The widow of his son Simon occupied it as her dower 1797 to after 1826.
John Whitney the blacksmith the oldest son of Benjamin
[p. 79]
the Soldier is the third in descent of this line. His land on Main Street extended from Lexington to near Forest Street. He bought of Eddy, Church, and the Town Committee. His first purchase was in 1724, twenty three acres of Benjamin Eddy. He was married about 1729 when he was 35 years old. His children are ten in number and four of them served in the Revolutionary War, in the Watertown Company.
His name appears in a list of Grantees ninety five in number in a recorded deed for a mansion house and eleven acres of land on Main Street near Whites Avenue to be used for a parsonage, probably for the third existing church in town. And his father Benjamin with fifty two others bound their estates in the sum of one thousand pounds as an obligation to pay Rev. Robt. Sturgeon £84 annual support as their

"Evangelical Pastor," "A gospel minister among us where the late Rev. Mr. S. Angier preached."
This pastor resided here for three years for rent was paid for that period before purchased as stated in the record. (See W.H.W. Abs. page 311 where this story is more fully related.)
Abraham whose descendants I now tabulate was his fifth child and the oldest living in 1776 at the time of his fathers death. His father and he lived in a double house on Lexington Street north of the well now there near Main Street and close to the public road.
More about John and Abraham's land will appear in other chapters.
I will now marshal the descendants of Abraham Whitney whom F. C. Pierce in Whitney Genealogy published 1895 as Number 307. All of these persons except-

ing four are omitted by Pierce. They are the descendants of John and Elinor who came over in the ship Elizabeth and Ann in 1635 and I trace each family back to him and number the generations back to his as number one.
All the collateral families from the fifth generation (Abraham's) are here. I do not tabulate the families of the eighth generation as I do those before, consequently their children, beginning with number 72 Mrs. Mary L. Mills - appear only opposite parents number in a new series of numbers found in the column of "Remarks." The numbers refer to place in a table which follows, called Ninth Generation Table, and in this I give names only, and a numeral X to indicate a new family making the tenth generation.
