He is identified and Joseph Stockbridge7 Whitney (Joseph Stockbridge6, Abraham5, Benjamin4, John3, Benjamin2, John1). In following the Federal Census, both of his sons went to California. Charles then went to Arizona, and Fred back to Maine.
Private, Co. G, 19th Maine Infantry
Joseph Stockbridge Whitney was pensioned on 1 July 1892 at $8.00 per month. His pension certificate number was 789081. His disability was varicose veins in both legs. He would eventually receive and increase in benefit, in 1907 to $12.00 per month. Over the years he became more disabled, due to rheumatism and heart disease.
On January 4, 1898, as part of an application for increase in benefit, Joseph resides at 37 Gage St., Augusta, Maine. He testifies that he married Esther Prebble on 20 August 1859 at Winslow, Maine. They were married by Robert Ayer, J.P. There is a record of the marriage at Winslow, and a copy of the record is included in the file. Neither had been previously married. Joseph also testifies that he has two children that are now living: Charles W. Whitney, born 30 May 1860; and Fred F. Whitney, born 24 December 1861.
In a Declaration for Pension benefit increase in 1908, Joseph is 70 years old, and a resident of Hallowell, Kennebec Co., Maine. He testifies that he enrolled at Augusta, Maine on 23 August 1862 as a Private in Co. G, 19th Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was honorably discharged at Augusta on 23 May 1865. His personal description at the time of his enlistment is: 5 feet 9 inches; complexion dark, brown eyes, dark hair, occupation lumberman. He was born 16 May 1838 at Rome, Maine. Since leaving the service, he has resided at Benton, Maine one year; Vassalboro four years, then until four months ago at Augusta, Maine; now resides at 295 Water St., Hallowell, Kennebec Co., Maine.
The file contains a copy of Joseph S. Whitney's death record from Vol. 4, page 54 of the Augusta, Maine records. The copy of the record says he died 31 July 1909, but there is a correction by the City Clerk, noting that date is an error, and he died 20 July, 1909. Joseph was 71 years old, and retired. He was born in Rome, Maine, and died of amputation of the thigh. His Father's name was Joseph Whitney, birthplace Rome, Maine, occupation farmer. Information about his mother was unknown.
On 9 August 1909, Esther Whitney applied for pension benefits. At that time she is 68 years old, and resides in Hallowell, Maine. She testifies that her husband's full name was Joseph Stockbridge Whitney, but never used his middle name. Esther lived for a number of years on Gage St. in Augusta, evidenced by applications for increase in benefits. In one application she states that she was born in 1841. Sometime after 1920, Esther joined her son Charles W. Whitney in Casa Grande, Pinal Co., Arizona. It was there that she died on 23 November 1926.
