He is identified as a Moses H.8 Whitney (Sedate7, John6, John5, (poss.)Samuel4, John3, Benjamin2, John1).
Moses H. Whitney enrolled for 3 years in Co. G, 8th Maine Regiment at Beaufort, S.C. 8 Feb 1864. He was mustered in 28 Feb 1864. He was reported missing in action 18 June 1864 near Petersburg, VA, but there was no evidence of his death. He was taken as a prisoner of war to Andersonville Prison, and then removed to Florence, S.C. when Sherman's army approached. He died there of chronic diarrhea in October 1864.
The original widow claim was filed by Paulina Z. (Wood) Whitney from Ellsworth, Maine, where they had been married 10 Aug 1861. Two subsequent letters were written by her requesting increased benefits, in 1916 and 1926. Each was written from Alton Bay, N.H., but the 1916 application form says she was a resident of Biddeford, ME.
